Is Campus Carry in Texas the best solution? With mass shootings on campus being more known, Texas concluded that the best solution is to allow anyone on campus to conceal carry. Texas needs to think about the increase risk by having more guns on campus and other possibilities. Concealed carry on campus in Texas should be banned because of college student’s mentality, student’s increase in alcohol and drug rates, and student’s viewpoints. College can have a major effect on students, especially for their mental health. For example, stress and depression is becoming more common in college students, which can lead to death. Drugs can affect the user’s mindset and thought process which can lead to unintentional actions. In the article, “Loneliness and Suicidal Ideation in Drug-Using College Students,” states that “prevalence rates for collegiate drug use from the Monitoring the Future study suggest that 37% of college students have used a drug besides alcohol.” It also found that “college students who use drugs are at risk for a number of negative outcomes” (Lamis 630). The facts prove that drug use is a problem in college students. Campus carry should be banned because students taking drugs and having an altered mentality can lead them involved in a dangerous situation if that person has a concealed handgun license or if the concealed handgun gets in the hands of someone that has an altered mentality. The campus carry law should be banned because of the concerns and negative viewpoint it has from students. A survey of college students in, “Students’ Opinions about Concealed Firearms on Campuses,” came to a finding “that 78% of participants were unsupportive of allowing students, faculty, and visitors to carry concealed handguns on campus” (Eaves 16). The law is making students feel uncomfortable in a place where they shouldn’t. Students should not have to feel uneasy sitting in class and listening to a lecture. This uneasiness can distract students from learning because they are concerned for their lives and continually thinking “who has a gun in here?” Thus, students tend to fear and avoid their professors because of the possibility of them having a concealed carry which can result to a negative impact on professor-student relationships.
