Social media enables people to interact with each other in various unexpected ways. It is supposed to be where people can express themselves without being judged based off their past, present, or future views or actions. However, over time, it has come to people being shunned, or cancelled by the internet and their supporters for participating in acts known to be socially unacceptable. To some, cancel culture allows for those in the wrong to be called out properly and not keep their actions in the dark. They do not show the hate received behind the posts and how it affects them daily. Cancel culture intensifies it by broadcasting the person(s) to a bigger audience, setting them up for an ambush. It indicts hate and oppression instead of providing a way for them to honor their feelings and take accountability. According to Gomez, “The goal of cancel culture is to make decent Americans live in fear of being fired, expelled, shamed, humiliated and driven from society as we know it,’” (qtd in Norris 150).
