The Pros And Cons Of Climate Change

Climate change is a controversial topic that has been discussed heavily over the last two decades. Researchers have been gathering data to determine if the overall change in the global temperature is solely based on routine changes in the environment, or if the overall temperature has warmed due to the drastic increase in carbon emissions over the last thirty years. Recently there was a meeting to discuss how to control these emissions. This meeting is known as the World Climate Summit which was held in Paris, France in 2015. They were able to come to an agreement regarding the rise in global temperature, and this agreement goes by the COP21. It suggests ways to reduce the rise in global temperature by two degrees celsius over the next century, …show more content…

There is a difference between climate and weather states scientists from the Chasing Ice Incorporation. “Weather is what conditions of the atmosphere are over a short period of time, and climate is how the atmosphere behaves over a relatively long period of time” (“The Science”). There are many gases that are released into the atmosphere by the industrialization such as water vapor, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons and carbon. It is estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that up to “65 percent of greenhouse gas emissions are carbon” (Global). There has been a drastic increase in the pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) over the last century. It is proven that “Industrialities of modern society have increased the CO2 levels from 280 parts per million to 400 parts per million over the last 150 years” (“Climate”). These high levels of emission can cause many effects to the overall weather conditions. These changes have already begun to develop across the world and can be seen as the “sea-level[s] rising, floods, storm surges, an increase in precipitation and heat waves” (Fears). If the levels pounds of CO2 being released into the atmosphere do not decrease, it is possible that “by the end of the century, [global atmospheric] temperatures could go up by 5°” (Fears). As a world it is necessary to begin research to find the alternative …show more content…

According to scientific activist Richard Brubaker, “concrete actions are being taken in China everyday” to move away from dirty energy. A major contributor to the large amounts of carbon that China has been releasing is due to their gargantuan urban development. This has required machinery to be operated more frequently than normal. This machinery is powered by dirty energy. The reduction of the use of the equipment has the potential to make an impact. One of the largest setbacks for China is its large-scale urban development. Currently it would be nearly impossible to use natural resources such as wind and solar power to power the large population. It will be years before China is able to power with renewable resources such as wind or solar energy. The number of people living in the cities is too large to have enough of the energy to power the large power grids required with only one or two of the resources. This is going to be the struggle for many countries as they begin to make the transition, and it will need to be researched in depth from many angles before implementation could occur. The discussions that are currently being held are vital in the beginning of the process to commence research and will have a positive outcome for China and other countries following a similar
