President-elect Donald Trump has many goals for his time in office, including changing, what he claims to be only a slightly different form of the taxation system already being used in the United States. His goal is what he believes will benefit the entirety of the country, yet the people who will have the most change in the percent of taxes being paid will be the upper class, which will pay up to ten percent less money in taxes than they are currently. Keeping in mind that this man is part of the one percent of the population who holds most of the wealth, one can only wonder if there is some type of bias happening here. Ultimately, the more you earn, the more you pay. At the start of the economics in our country, America's founders rejected the idea of a progressive tax, due to the fact that they were all rich men, feeling victimized by just the idea of paying a higher percent of taxes. Yet they recognized the idea for a need of equal protection for all of it’s citizens. This idea is further expressed when the Fourteenth Amendment promised “equal protection of the laws” to all citizens (Folsom). Most can argue that those who can afford to pay more, should. Those who earn little income could deserve help, especially when they are working long hours for much less, obviously this isn’t necessarily true with each person, but the majority of the time it is. “CEOs of 350 top U.S. corporations now have average salaries 331 times those of the average American worker,” (Lewis) therefore it doesn’t make sense for them to pay the same amount in taxes as people working at minimum wage.
Progressive tax can also serve as a sort of safety net, which can help people operate better. When a person’s income fails, their taxation responsibilities do as well. This gives citizens a certain type of protection, when experiencing an unfair and (or) unexpected loss in income. As well as that, with progressive taxation there is no need to provide social services or some programs to be able to pay a high tax by a certain deadline
