Today I called the Illinois Representative Michael J. Madigan office and received his answering machine. I left him a message asking him to please consider passing bills for sentencing reform legislation, such as the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act (SRCA), S.2123. I told him that I am a registered voter and it has come to my attention that the federal prison population has skyrocketed dramatically over the past 35 years and most of the people in the prisons are in for minimum drug sentences. I told him that while people are in prison they are losing income, job skills, and are typically unable to attend rehabilitation programs. All of these aspects make it extremely difficult for the people to obtain jobs or get on the right path once
People get incarcerated due to many reasons and sometimes they get harsh sentencing due to their crime. The crimes may either be intentional or accidental, but that is no excuse for the bureau of prisons. The prison sentences are sometimes doubled and tripled. These sentences are so harsh sometimes that the prisoners don’t get to see their family members anymore. Sentencing reform should be able to be in prisons not only statewide but globally because it will give prisoners a chance to fix their mistakes.
Current policy allows government agencies to fund private, non-profit correctional facilities (also referred to as private prisons). While new policies to end federal contracts with private prisons have been issued, government agencies such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), continue to work with private prisons now known as immigration detention facilities. The continued support of private prisons by government agencies for the last four decades has sparked public debate. “Conflict over the direction of government policy” on private prisons has resulted in the use of private prisons to be an unresolved public policy issue (1). Modern private, for-profit correctional facilities emerged in the 1980s that allowed private corporations to have full operational control for the first time.
However, the United States has one of the best rehabilitation techniques and facilities in the world. Rehabilitation is the aspect of the United States correctional system that keeps it from being completely looked down on. One of the main issues when it comes to the prison and correctional system is the living conditions, according to an article on “Kicker”,”How the prison system is failing”, the living conditions are described as poor and inhumane. These living conditions also lead to serious incapacitation, which means there is not enough space for newly convicted criminals to fit inside the prisons.
In recent years, many prisons have been working on programs to aid prisoners, with minor offences, to have a smooth transition back into society. One way to improve the prison system is
United States Prisons: A Mental Cage The United States is one of the world’s most recognized and powerful superpowers since its industrial and commercial production along with their nearly limitless military budget make them practically invincible. This demonstrates the power of the United States on foreign soil and problems, yet many internal problems in the United States are left disregarded and neglected, simply thrown away. Citizens and lawmakers remain silent on several key social issues and on one of the biggest shameful topics of neglect, America’s incarceration rate.
After committing a crime the biggest fear of a criminal is getting caught and going to prison. A prison is a building in which people are legally held as a punishment for crimes they have committed or while awaiting trial. The Federal Bureau of Prisons was established in 1930.1 The duty of Federal Bureau of Prisons is to ensure that federal offenders serve their sentences in safe facilities that will ensure their successful return to the community. The Federal Bureau of Prisons is in charge of 212,283 inmates and has 39,422 employees.2 The Bureau goals are to provide a safe environment, to protect the public, and offer inmates a crime-free life.
Seeing as how the U.S. leads the world in prison populations—with an exaggeratedly high amount being black and Latino men, it is crucial that we take a step in ending this corrupt cycle. Societal progress is dependant on an improved incarceration system which focuses on preventing confinement, rather than the allocation of prisons for people who are doing their best to survive.
In conclusion, in order to reform prisons we need to build new and better prisons. We have to make it safer inside the prison. Just as reforming it to make it more humane by giving prisoners better food and having rehabilitation programs and treating them like actual people. In the same way we need to make prisons a lot more fair by changing the way women are being treated and change how prisoners with disabilities are being treated. The U.S prison system needs to be reformed by building new and better prisons and making it more humane and fair.
Contested political debates, regarding prison reform, date back to the early 1890s. During the following century and to date, considerable progress occurred towards a more fair and just prison system, however, not at a steady and consistent pace. Progress in prison reformed greatly slowed in the years following the 1890s and prison conditions declined during the 1940s (Sullivan), leading to countless prison revolts and lawsuits. For instance, in the 1950s, prisoners rebelled and fought back against the harsh living conditions and unfair treatment following the steady decline in prison conditions. These original prison reform movements laid the crucial framework for our modern prison reform movement based around the ideas associated with
“Most of us think prison is a place where bad people go which is what I thought for a long time until you really start to look inside the system and you see, this is not right.” ~Ava Duvernay. In the prison system they are getting paid for people that’s in prison, the more people in cells the more money they make. They give people a life sentence for little things like drugs so I just think the system is really messed up. The U.S Prison system is really unfair, and two of the most important aspects to understand about it are the war on drugs and private prisons.
