After committing a crime the biggest fear of a criminal is getting caught and going to prison. A prison is a building in which people are legally held as a punishment for crimes they have committed or while awaiting trial. The Federal Bureau of Prisons was established in 1930.1 The duty of Federal Bureau of Prisons is to ensure that federal offenders serve their sentences in safe facilities that will ensure their successful return to the community. The Federal Bureau of Prisons is in charge of 212,283 inmates and has 39,422 employees.2 The Bureau goals are to provide a safe environment, to protect the public, and offer inmates a crime-free life. The five methods are minimum, low, medium, high, complex, and administrative. The minimum security prisons are "low staff-to-inmate ratio, and are limited or no perimeter fencing".5 Low security prisons have a higher ratio than minimum prisons and have doubled fenced perimeters. Medium security prisons have greater controls inside and the perimeters are strengthened by double fences and electric detection systems. High security means the highest staff-to-inmate ratio. The perimeters are very secured an example would be featured walls. Federal Correctional Complexes are very close in proximity but they each have different missions. Upon arrival at a prison the criminal would be interviewed and screened by the staff from case management, medical, and mental health units.6 Then later the inmate will attended the A&O program, which is basically orientation. "The institution issues clothing, hygiene items, and bedding; and provides laundry services."6 The amount of personal property is limited in prisons but inmates can purchase some items such as food, shoes, or clothes. Programs are provided for inmates inside a prison. Some of the programs include education, medical care, religious, reentry, work, and substance abuse treatment.8 Female inmates who are pregnant get medical and social services. The programs relate to pregnancy, abortion, child placement, and birth control. If a female inmate is pregnant and childbirth takes place the mother would be taken to a hospital outside the prison; although social services is involved to place the child in a temporary home.
