What is a prison? People sometimes get Jail and Prison mixed up and they are two totally different things. Prison is a building or vessel in which people are legally held as a punishment for crimes they have committed or while awaiting trial (Google). Jail is a locally-operated, short term facility where as a Prison that is state or federally operated is a long term facility. This is where bad people go. London is known as the birthplace of modern imprisonment (Crime Museum). The first prison was built in 1790. This concept was formed by a philosopher named Jeremy Bentham because he was against the death penalty and wanted a better way at punishing criminals (Crime Museum). Every branch of military has their own prison facilities that are used specifically for people in the military who have broken laws that affect national security, or to house prisoners of war. The other types of prisons are called State and Federal Penitentiaries. The main difference between state and federal prison is the amount time served in a sentence.
