In today’s media, there are a conglomerate of television and internet programming that shows dramatizations and actual accounts of prison life and how inmates interact with one another. Television shows like Orange is the New Black and Oz have garnered much popularity due to each being able to closely “replicate” the setting (bedding, cells, confinement), and overall prison culture. Despite the popularity, the shows remain just as such, entertainment. The first one states that the organization is to “assist the agency in maintaining the safety of both staff and inmates, while eliminating the need to increase the security of other penitentiaries.” (prea) The second mission statement explicates that the ADX’s purpose is to “confine inmates under close controls while providing them opportunities to demonstrate progressively responsible behavior; participate in programs in a safe, secure environment; and establish readiness for transfer to a less secure institution.(prea) The main purpose of the two mission statements is to establish that ADX Florence will protect society from the inmates that would cause harm and danger towards society, while also trying to rehabilitate to be transferred to a lesser secure institution. Meals prepared under the food service department are supervised under a cook supervisor, who has a responsibility to ensure that dishware is clean, ensure that fair food portions are given, and maintain proper cooking and temperature of food for consumption. Inmate system department consists of three areas: record office, receiving and discharge, and the mail room. The record office maintains the inmate’s judgment and commitment file and computes the inmate’s sentence and updates the sentencing. The receiving and discharging section will receiving and mailing the inmate’s personal property upon discharge and commitment from the institution. The mail room operates throughout the week and any mail received by the mail room will be distributed to the inmates.
