Adam, a 20-year old, went home from college to visit his family like every other typical month. One night around midnight he heard walking in the house, thinking it was his family. He got up only to realize that it wasn’t his family, it was three robbers. He ran downstairs to the family safe and retrieved the AR-15, going back up stairs to confront the criminals he flashed the weapon at them and they fled from the house to the nearest exit. First, to understand the Second Amendment, the interpretation has to be established. Joe Wolverton, a New American Journalist states the Second Amendment “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (Wolverton). This statement is important so discussion can begin on if gun control actually infringes this amendment or not. Next, assault weapons must have boundary to separate them from other guns. “…An assault weapon is generally considered to be an semi-automatic weapon with a detachable ammunition magazine and some type of advanced feature typically used in military-grade weapons” (“Assault Weapons”). If any weapon as these features, then the U.S. can determine how many people own these types of weapons from gun records. Following this, mass shootings have been a rising issue in the United States. “In 2011, a gunman opened fire at a political event held by representative Gabriel Giffords (D, Arizona) in Tuscon, Arizona, badly wounding the congresswoman and killing six people using a handgun capable of firing 33 rounds without reloading” (“Assault Weapons”). Undeniably mass shootings are something nobody wants to witness, the United States needs to figure out a way to stop these fatal shootings.
