The Second Amendment of the United States constitution reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The right of all Americans to bear arms is a right the Founding Fathers held to equal importance as the constitution itself. (The Guardian, 2017). The idea of gun control laws directly violates this constitutional right. The NRA believes that gun control should not be under consideration. Despite this constitutional right, gun control is needed to reduce firearm related violence. Many believe that applying these laws will not reduce crimes committed with the use of guns; those who wish to commit crimes will continue to do so illegally. The NRA is highly controversial because they are heavily against all forms of gun control and aggressively claim that the more guns there are, the safer the country is. (BBC News, 2016). The NRA blamed the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012 on the lack of an armed guard at the school. They refused to blame this tragedy on the shooter, Adam Lanza. Adam Lanza showed signs of “severe and deteriorating internalized mental health problems” and was still able to access numerous firearms. (NY Times, 2014). The fact that an elementary school needs an armed guard to remain safe says plenty about gun control in the US. Las Vegas shooter, Stephen Paddock, reportedly carried over 20 weapons legally on October 1, 2017. A dozen of the 23 firearms recovered in Las Vegas were semi automatic rifles legally modified to fire like automatic weapons. (Washington Post, 2017).
