Should there be more laws regarding gun control? “The United States has 88.8 guns per 100 people, or about 270,000,000 guns, which is the highest total and per capita number in the world. 22% of Americans own one or more guns (35% of men and 12% of women).” (Gun Control) Excluding suicide, some 13,286 people were killed by firearms in the year 2015 and 28,819 were injured. (Statistics) Those figures may not seem to be a large sum to people not affected by those shootings, but put yourself in the shoes of parents whose children got shot. Would you think we need more gun laws? More gun laws should be enforced, in order to, protect our environment, prevent mass murders, and to be more aware of who the gun owner is. Crimes involving guns have occurred more and more over the years such as in, school shootings, mass murders, and suicide. At schools, more than 187,000 children have been exposed to gun violence since the Columbine shooting. (Pearle) In 2015, it was reported that there was a shooting every week, on average, on a school, or college campus. “We're only 12 weeks into 2018, and there have already been 17 school shootings where someone was hurt or killed. Studies show that gun control laws don’t prevent crime or violence, the owner does. This doesn’t mean that gun control laws won’t reduce death by gun. (Gun Control) The reason for many gun purchases are to fulfill the owner’s “sense of security” from having a gun. Guns are meant for use in more ways than one such as, hunting or self defense, but many people find other ways to put them to use. With stricter gun laws the hope is that we are better familiar with whom we sell these guns to, but there is also the issue that a person who cannot pass a background check will go about other ways of finding one such as,
