When many first hear of Holocaust denial they assume one is telling them some kind of poorly-written joke. However, much to the dismay of most with an education, holocaust denial is very real. Holocaust deniers defend themselves by saying it's a matter of free speech, that if treated with intolerance it is an infringement on the freedom of speech. However, this is far from the case and story. Holocaust denial is an attempt to reject the horrors done against Jews, as well as other minority groups, and to discredit historical realities, not an issue of free expression. It is important to counteract Holocaust denial in an effective way. A legal way to approach this would be to study the behaviour someone is exhibiting under this “idea” and, in many cases, they unknown or knowingly violate laws that could end with the person in question in prison. While I don’t agree with jailing everyone, people who are still anti-semic and avid holocaust deniers are more likely to cause personal harm to someone else (and be a neo-nazi, or full-blown nazi). This connects well with the next idea of banishment. Individuals, organisations, and governments should all vigorously denounce Holocaust denial. It is critical to state unequivocally that Holocaust denial is not a valid form of discourse and has no place in civic society. In place of banishment, education is the best way to handle Holocaust denial. Through ensuring factoids of the holocaust are taught in primary levels of school (the schooling most people complete, i.e. high school, middle school, etc..). It is important people know of and use information sources (American Holocaust Museum Website) when needed to reference the Holocaust.
