Source two is an anonymous article describing the pros and cons of maquiladoras. The author of source 2 displays a neutral perspective on maquiladoras and their place in economic globalization. Although, the source can be interpreted with a positive or negative viewpoint depending on one's perspective. The article starts off by stating the positives of maquiladoras. More than 3000 maquiladoras employ 17 percent of the Mexican workforce allowing it to be the second largest source of jobs in the nation. Foreign companies are able to pay workers low wages when they invest in building these plants in Mexico. When these plants are invested in, Mexico is able to benefit economically as external investment is happening. The trade of products made in maquiladoras are also tariff-free, benefitting all economic parties involved. Maquiladoras are able to contribute to the industrialization and economic growth of Mexico. However, the author then presents the negatives of maquiladoras. Low wages and harsh working conditions are just some of the cons of maquiladoras. Maquiladoras commonly provide unsafe conditions to vulnerable workers. Many work long hours facing exhaustion sacrificing their health and well being to make low wages that often fail to provide for a sufficient standard of living. In addition, women in the industry are often exploited even more. They face even lower wages than male workers and are often harassed and discriminated against. Even so, these women do not have a choice but to work for maquiladoras to attempt to provide for themselves and their families.
