Race is not determined by biology. Instead, it is socially constructed. According to the notes, a social construct; created and maintained through cultural or social practice. A person who is considered African American or black in the United States could be considered white in other countries. How people perceive their racial identity can shift based on experiences, For example, multiracial and mixed-race community. In America, there are over 9 million and more, who self-identified as “multiracial” community. In the late 1900’s, society seen multiracial as being considered as color. It was a crime for white people to marry non-white people. However, the law was overturned by the Supreme Court, ruling on Loving v. Virginia. Todays, society self-identified mixed race as being equally black and white. The mix race community can explore both sides of their culture. Today’s generation can look upon color and race. Today’s society, have laws that protect and maintain racial identity, for example; The Civil Rights Act of 1964: Title VII (Equal Employment Opportunities), the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, U.S. Code Title 42 (Chapter 21-Civil Rights) and etc. Race is a subject that is never going always. Children need to understand the true meaning of race. Race identity doesn’t define you, you as a person define
