The picture of Lady Liberty with open arms outstretched to the poor and down-trodden throughout the world is an inspiring symbol for conservative and liberal citizens of the United States of America. They are united in the desire to continue living out the Founders’ vision in the modern age. However, they are divided in their interpretation of exactly who is included within that embrace. The terminology of ‘open immigration’ sounds appealing to many residents of the USA. After all, why shouldn’t everyone be able to enter our wonderful homeland? Once they do the work and pay the fees to become naturalized, they proudly join the rest of the American populace on even ground with the same rights and duties all Americans share. What happens if this logical and prudent process is skipped? Open Borders and Open Immigration If a stranger is invited to stay overnight in a family’s home, they might appreciate the gesture and desire to repay the kindness. Conversely, they might kill the family and steal the valuables. It depends on the individual who was invited in. Locking the front door at night is equivocal to closing the borders of a sovereign nation until said nation decides to permit lawful entry. The recent Immigration order delineated seven countries deemed by the previous administration to be the most concerning in regards to screening individuals for lawful entry into the U.S. Why? Consider one of the countries affected by the 90-day order – Syria. How exactly can officials vet a person from a country engulfed in war? Simply put, it is impossible. Those who point out the extended period necessary before entry is allowed seem to forget how patient terrorists can be. September 11th was not planned or carried out in a short period of
