In the first few pages, there are soldiers shown with dangerous firearms, and only a few pages later soldiers are shown taking men and boys away from their families. Parents and adults may believe that children will be taught to view all governments in a negative light, and will rebel against the government when they are older. If adults taught children that not all governments are the same, though, and that the government is meant to protect citizens and not hurt them, then children wouldn’t be that way. Therefore, if adults tried to explain to children the messages and themes conveyed in Nasreen’s Secret School, and other books like it, there wouldn’t be a need to censor; children and teens would be able to understand better the differences in the world and other ideals and cultures without being negatively
However , no piece of literature should be banned or censor. Instead , there should be warning labels such as movie labels. According to a graph from www.ala.org , one of the main reasons why books are banned was because of offensive language , and violent behaviors. Why are books being banned when the media is showing similar materials without being banned ? We as students , are actively aware to events occurring with media.
Censorship protects kids. In the article entitled “What Children Need is Censorship”, Aric Sigman remarks, “The difference between a child and an adult is that children are more vulnerable to the effects of everything from sunburn and alcohol to ideas and images.” Children are easily influenced most of the time. When they see adults doing things, they wanna do it, too. Sigman also says while free speech may be a laudable aim between adults, the concept is now being used primarily by commercial interests to speak freely to our children.
Every child deserves a proper education. Banned books are depriving students of a well rounded, culturally aware, literary education because of the culture that is discarded, the history that is being withheld, and the education that young people could get through these banned books. The point of history is to learn from it and learn from others mistakes, but how can we do that if we are not allowed to learn it. As teachers shouldn’t you be teaching us how to make judgment calls like understanding that Mark Twain was a racist, but a man of his time and that doesn’t change him being an amazing writer. We cannot learn things such as that if we cannot even read most of Mark Twain’s books.
In the World State Mond states “ Our civilization has chosen machinery and medicine and happiness. That’s why I have to keep these books locked up in the safe.” (234). To maintain the citizens happy the Controller decides to ban history before Ford. In our society we are been restricted knowledge in schools.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, these are only a few people mentioned in class, but what about Claudette Colvin who nine months before Rosa Parks, decided not to get off the bus and was taken to jail, or Emmett Till who was 14 and brutally beaten and killed for whistling at a white woman. These are only a few who are not mentioned in our history books or classrooms. Students are taught mathematics, Science, World and American history because it is important. Black history is also important, it teaches the contribution African Americans have made in the past and continue making in the future.
It denies individuals of finding out about their general surroundings. Books should not be banned because of what they appear to be. For instance, restricting books are unlawful and not valuable for schools. '' I don't think a school board can wrap its political concerns in the cloak of educational suitability,'' Mr. Levine said (“Book-Banning Arguments are heard ”). The statement is vital in light of the fact that it gives
“American citizens who care about the improvement of education are urged to join students, teachers, librarians, administrators, boards of education, and professional and scholarly organizations in support of the students’ right to read” (The Students Right to Read). Citizens should be allowed to stand up if they believe books should not be banned. It is important that writers should be able to have their books out to the public without getting banned. “Challengers often employ a definition that maintains that banning materials is the only true form of censorship,”(Knox 740). Censorship of books is common and a real problem.
States have been removing or hiding history from students. In Denver, students are protesting about a school board review which wants to “[ensure] that teaching materials present positive aspects of the U.S history” and promote citizenship” (Wallace n. pag.).Tulsa Race Riot history is an important U.S. history event which hasn’t been incorporated into many textbooks, even though there were “dozens of deaths [and] hundreds of injuries” and also the destruction of Greenwood which later results in students poor knowledge of where they came from (Hoberock n. pag.). In Texas, it is being taught that slavery was just a side issue of the Civil War because guidelines for teaching American history do not include the teaching of the Ku Klux Klan or Jim Crow Laws. This gives a false impression to students.
Censorship Censorship in schools may not be the best choice for enriching the future minds of the United States of America. Children of the United States of America should have the right to learn about anything for it is there amended right. Taking knowledge away from them and censoring it should not be the answer to keeping our Children pure it should be what we teach our kids. We need to teach them right and wrong that is what will keep our child’s mind pure. Many books are being taken off shelves every day in student libraries because a couple people do not think that the book is suitable for children.

Why are some websites on a school server restricted? It’s because most students would not even go to the website the teacher tells them to go to and also most go to inappropriate sites. Which would consume the child’s mind with stupide but most teachers have problems with the restricted sites. Teachers and students use the internet as a resource, so they can either learn or teach.
It is evident that censorship is widely common in school. Some books are banned from school libraries due to content, while others are banned from being read in English classes. At one point in time, over 7,220 books have been challenged to be banned. Though these books have been removed for the safety of children, not all books should be banned for many reasons. These include the fact that banning books is infringing on the First Amendment, keeping children from understanding the real world, and, even though there are many reasons for book banning, not banning books could help a student’s education and can even work against itself. Banning a book from a school or public library could go against a person’s First Amendment of the freedom of press.
