Public school is one of the primary sources of education for many children in the United States, therefore it should be the school 's sole purpose to teach them the essential elements they need to succeed in life. This means more than teaching math, science, history, and English. A school, primarily high school, must provide courses that focus on a student 's future career plans, courses that challenge a student academically, and courses that help a student navigate their life as adults. Without classes that help students expand and delve into their future career choices, they can limit their views of success. An excellent example of this can be found in Jonathan Kozol 's Still Separate, Still Unequal, particularly in his interviews with the students of Fremont High School in Los Angeles.

Garland argues that “the pressure to look fashionable and act cool outweighs any concern for learning.” She tells us that current safety measures like metal detectors and security guards have not be enough to beat the conflict of criminals in school. She claims that school ideas have to be reconstructed. Anita Garland tells us that the essential change to school structure should be school attendance; stop making it mandatory.

In The Cask of Amontillado, Thank you Mam, and The Most dangerous game the author uses characters speech to develop the character personality.
Knowledge is kept from students which leaves them bored and causes violence. When Clarisse is telling Montag about her school, she says that they have "'an hour of TV class, an hour of basketball or baseball or running, another hour of transcription history or painting pictures, and more sports, but do you know, we never ask questions, or at least most don't; they just run the answers at you'" (27). They spend the whole day at school keeping the student busy without allowing them to think or use their brains at all. The students have information thrown at them too fast to process and are distracted from thinking and doing anything that stimulates their brain. This version of school either leaves people exhausted or in need of activity to use the energy and thoughts that are wasted during school.

A gap year can help relieve stress after high school and help refocus students to prepare them for the future (O’Shea 103). Some high school students feel like college is a pressured part of life that cannot be skipped. A gap year can help a student with what they want their career path to be or what school is right for them (O’Shea 16). The gap year is mostly the student’s choice and not society’s choice which makes it an individual decision.
Students not being used to freedom, for example, causes them to not be prepared for the over amount of freedom given during college. This leads kids to put off homework, not go to class, and other bad habits because they are not used to managing their time. These habits can lead to an unsuccessful college carrer, eventually leading to dropping out. A second example at the meso level is students getting caught up in partying on the weekends or even during the week. For a lot of students, being away from their parents means absolute freedom to do whatever they want, allowing a lot of young adults to “go crazy” in the partying scene.
