Achievement means more than a score on a standardized test. Often, students are given standardized test in school that are suppose to test how much a student has learned over time or how much knowledge they have gained, but this way of testing has become unfair.
Standardized testing not only stresses out students, but it also leads the teachers to go in a dilemma whether to focus on the curriculum or to get students ready for the standardized testing. No one has ever enjoyed taking a test in his or her entire educational history. Similarly Mr. Estrada’s 4th grade class was not every excited about taking standardized test. Each student has his or her own level of learning. As the students were taking the test, I noticed some students were panicking, while others were confused.
Since 2006, overall SAT scores have dropped by 21 points. It is safe to say that the increase in standardized testing has done more bad than good. When standardized testing became more prominent, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) saw a plateau in reading and math scores. Additionally, the NAEP saw no further closure in the test score gap. The test score gap affects all minorities.
My age-adjusted IQ score is 90, which is lower average compared to people my age. The IQ score, 90 is 1 standard deviation away from 100, the average score of all test takers. Standard deviation is a measure of how close or far numbers, in this case scores, are close to the mean. Additionally, it will create a normal bell-curve of the statistics to determine how close the numbers are to the mean, which is 100 for this IQ test.

A standardized test is a test that is given in a consistent or “standard” manner. Standardized tests are designed to have consistent questions, administration procedures, and scoring procedures. When a standardized test is administered, it is done so according to certain rules and specifications so that testing conditions are the same for all test takers. They often provide some type of “standard score” which can help interpret how far a child score ranges from the average student (Johnson).
Many people disagree with standardized testing. These people argue that standardized testing causes extremely high pressure/stress to do well. I personally think we should not take standardized in school because they don’t measure a whole person’s abilities, they are performed poorly by they US, and they don’t measure a teachers abilities well.
Standardized testing was created as a measuring system to compare individual student’s skill level to a large group quickly. Standardized tests can date back as far as the 1800’s. Almost one-hundred years later, a psychologist, Alfred Binet developed a skill test that spread into both school and military testing. Thirty years later, the popular SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) was created and accepted by universities to gain entrance into the school (Fletcher). While standardized tests do give a baseline of knowledge quickly, it does not accurately measure a student’s full knowledge and takes away from class time learning.
