Instead of facilitating the war on terrorism and drugs, the program has breed a new type of law enforcement officers who carry out every operation in a military manner, relying on military tools and a military mindset even in situations, such as peaceful public demonstrations, that do not call for the use of excessive force. The police are needed to be a symbol to communities, that they are indeed there to protect becoming a more aggressive force does not give people that same reassurance. "However, the program has been heavily criticized for militarizing law enforcement agencies that has led to increased violent conduct among law enforcers" (Kraska, 2007) Its thought that aggressive policing is what's needed to stop crime in America but its a tactic that
One common opinion is that officers should not use more force than is necessary or reasonable, and even then, that force should be used only as a last resort. “Police use force to affect civilians’ conduct. On a day-to-day basis, they do so most often by employing the least degree of force available to them, their mere presence. Cops wear uniforms and drive distinctly marked cars so that, without saying a word, they may have an effect on citizens’ behavior” (Fyfe, 38). When an officer’s presence fails to fulfill the desired conduct, the next course of action for said officer would be verbalization.
Some people argue that the tactics used by the police
Imagine driving home from a long day, minding your own business when all of a sudden you notice a state trooper behind you with their lights on. What do you do? Do you panic or act natural? In today 's time, it doesn 't matter if you do anything wrong or not. It could be the color of your skin or the way you act and move!
Police officers have vowed their life to protect and serve. They risk their lives every day for their communities. As the last few years have sped past us, police officers have been very aggressive with the force they use when arresting a suspect, or even people in general. According to a Texas article on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights, “police officers typically use force offensively rather than defensively and do so with at least some degree of premeditation.” (Gross,2013, page 167).
The development of the Bomb Squad and SWAT Teams are prime examples of how police departments are militarizing. Supporters of the militarization of police forces state that it is essential to keep up with the potential threats of terrorism and gangs. It is the police’s duty to keep their country safe and if the only way to accomplish this is to militarize the police, it is necessary. While it aids in keeping the community safe, the main reason supporters encourage militarization is that it protects the police officers from being harmed (Sheeler). Their heavy equipment protects them, enabling them to defend the community.
Police officers use the amount of force necessary to ease the situation, arrest an individual, or protect themselves and others from harm. A certain amount of people understand that excessive force is required in different situations. There are moments when police officers will be obligated to use excessive force to calm the situation. For example; Rahtz said, “Then you have others who understand that in some situations, force is not only necessary but is required, if serious, injury or death is avoided” (Rahtz, 2007). Force can be necessary and understood
The 2nd amendment of the United States states that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” But is that truly the way that the United States should be governed under? The United States has the one of the highest amount of deaths related to gun violence in the entire world, 31st in the world exactly, but the fact that is baffling is that for such a developed and country with a strong infrastructure, why are these rates so high? From mass shooting in schools, clubs, gatherings, and neighborhoods all across America, there is certainly something else behind these mass shootings. Gun violence is an aching issue on the hands of the hands of the United States government as well, as congress is finding it difficult to
The main goal of a officer is to gain control of situation, to protect and serve the community. So if they can 't regulate the problem, by using the low levels of force, then they simply must increase the amount of force. Also
The principle explains that police should use only the amount of physical force necessary to restore order and protect public if using warning or persuasion is not working on an individual. This is important because it is not ok for anyone to use physical force in not completely necessary. If using physical force is not required, then it should always be avoided. Although, if an officer must use physical force than it should be the least amount necessary to protect the individual and surrounding public. For modern police officers this an important principle, this is not always followed and not following this principle causes many unnecessary tragedies and conflicts.
In some cases, police officers exert excessive force on individuals. The amount of force should be necessary for the situation. For example, a police officer should not use a weapon because a civilian will not obey an initial command. In the article, When Does Force Become Excessive?,
It is important to maintain our equipment because without our equipment or non-efficient equipment, our mission success or readiness goes down. This is especially important in the military because of the seriousness of our jobs. It is in the Army values "I will always maintain my arms, my equipment, and myself." Army Regulation seven hundred fifty dash one establishes policies assigns responsibilities for the maintenance of Army materiel. The provisions of the regulation are applicable to all Army and civil-funded property under the direct control of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The rise in violent conflicts between the citizens of the United States and the police is the issue that I want to solve. Due to my own age, race and gender, I am very well aware that I may be personally and directly impacted by this issue. The interaction between people of color and law enforcement in America is a key aspect of this larger issue. This issue has two main viewpoints: (1) that of people of color and, (2) that of law enforcement. While these two viewpoints overlap and intersect at several points, I believe them to be separate problems, each caused by different things.
The public has a misconception that deadly force is the same thing as excessive force. They can be similar if the police use deadly force to a point where every officer discharges their entire magazine on person when the threat has been eliminated. Officers receive hours of training on how to shoot a gun, but sometime receive little instruction on how to determine when to use the gun. Training starts in the Police Academy, and continues throughout their careers. There are officers who teach and train the departments every month.
