During his first state of the union address, Donald Trump said, "There has never been a better time to start living the American Dream. So, to every citizen watching at home tonight, no matter where you have been, or where you 've come from, this is your time. If you work hard, if you believe in yourself, if you believe in America, then you can dream anything, you can be anything, and together, we can achieve absolutely anything (Trump 2018)." His assessment is correct in every way because every American citizen has unlimited access to what he or she needs to fulfill their American dream if they work hard at it. In Cal Thomas’ article, “Is the American Dream Over?”, he rebuttals against liberal writer Bob Herbert. Herbert had listed reasons why the American dream is suffering for the new generations. Hebert wrote, “…the economy and jobs, the public schools, the budget deficits, the nonstop warfare overseas -- you 'll see a country in sad shape. Standards of living are declining, and American parents increasingly believe that their children will inherit a very bad deal." Cal Thomas rebuttals by saying that Herbert does not point out who is to blame for those declines. He also states that the traditional American dream is still there for those who are willing to work for it and that the new American dream of consuming material goods is failing.
