The Welfare Reform is a program that was set up to aid and provide public assistance (Opposing Viewpoints). This type of assistance aids families who are in need of funds due to no income or very little income. Over the next years, the Welfare Reform Act has been slightly changed. Some changes have been an improvement to the program, while other changes did not make an impact on the individuals who receive this form of assistance. Critics of the welfare program have insisted the programs hinders people who receive this form of support. While some insist the Welfare programs help families in need. These critics also insisted the length of time a person can be on this program needed to be limited. They feared that individuals would abuse the assistance they received by intentionally not seeking employment and having more children to receive larger pay-outs. This controversial issue also brought up an important issue; the concern is that welfare caused individuals to continue their struggle rather than assist. The number of welfare recipient decreased by 60 percent (Opposing Viewpoints). Also, child support payments have doubled. There was also a downfall. Under welfares new requirement recipient were instructed to seek employment. This was to eradicate them from the welfare program. What this ultimately did was move people who were welfare poor to working poor, leaving them in poverty (Opposing Viewpoints). Though the number of Welfare recipients have decreased because of the rebuilding of the program, many argue the reconstruction also created a negative impact.
