The modern debate over the vaccination of today’s youth has always been a tetchy subject. The controversy continues to rise over whether it is ethical for parents to continue subjecting their children to immunization that contains chemicals they may not be aware, in the hopes of possibly preventing their child from contracting a disease, versus the ethicality of abstaining from injecting children to such shots and risking them contracting preventable diseases and perhaps causing the mutation of illnesses, epidemics, and death. According to the World Health Organization, immunization averts over 2 to 3 million deaths every year; however, an additional 1.5 million death could be avoided if global immunization improved. Many professionals may also believe there is no use in vaccinating en masse, such as Dr. Franklyn N. Judson. According to Dr. Judson, director of public health, “There is no benefit… [of vaccinating medical professionals and first responders]... ” (A Shot). Judson protests the vaccinations of those in the city as well as those in medical professions due the small likelihood of smallpox appearing in his city. However, those in the possessions of dealing with many possibly infected people should become vaccinated in an effort to prevent an epidemic as well as be prepared for the chance an almost eradicated illness could return. Though anti-vaxxers refuse to vaccinate their children via claims of abnormal developments and increased illness, these claims are scientifically proven to be false. Vaccinations do not cause disorders nor does do they cause diseases. Some may claim there is no need to vaccinate mass populations for illnesses nearly eradicated; however, several outbreaks of thought-to-be-eliminated diseases such as measles and smallpox have shown this is in fact a necessary precaution.
