During the Armenian genocide, which began in Turkey in 1915, the Ottoman government systematically murdered 1.5 million Armenians. In the historical novel, Forgotten Fire, by Adam Bagdasarian, the story of how young Vahan Kenderian survived the Armenian genocide is told. Twelve-year-old Vahan is forced to grow up at an alarming rate. He experiences tremendous loss and grief in a short span of time. Despite all of his troubles, Vahan is able to resist succumbing to his fears and never loses the hope that one day he will be safe again.
Several studies have been conducted to characterize the lasting impacts that wildfires have had on water quality. In the novel Forgotten Fire by Adam Bagdasarian, Vahan Kenderian witnessed his world fall apart around him. First, his wise and disciplinary Father is taken away and never heard from again, then his two oldest brothers are shot in front of his eyes. Finally, he is taken away from his home and taken to a dilapidated inn. After he and his brother run away, he is forced to travel across Turkey with nowhere to go. Without his father’s wise words, he is forced to repeat that it all will build character and make him stronger.
Not many people could escape the Armenian Genocide, especially on their own at age 14 after the rest of their family had been kidnapped or killed in front of their eyes. But Vahan Kenderian did in Forgotten Fire, by Adam Bagdasarian, a historical novel, the main character Vahan goes from being a child to a man throughout the story. Nothing in life can be taken for granted because it could be gone in a second. The main character, Vahan, had a very good life before the genocide, a top class house and a family that cared for him and loved him and was rather wealthy, but he learns how quickly that can all disappear.
Faith. Anytime something unexpected happens to anyone, everyone always says have faith; but is it faith in God, others, yourself? Elie Wiesel author of the memoir Night went through an immense amount of struggles and through it all he was able to venture into that question, and through this, he was able to reveal something very important about humanity. Through his struggle in the Holocaust, he explored how well faith in God, other and himself were able to keep him going and he revealed that faith and depending on oneself is what can get anyone through anything no matter how tough. First, as Elie had to survive through tragic events like most people the thing he chose to believe in first was God.
The rights and freedoms of Americans have been evolving since the decision was made to break free from England. Even though African Americans were granted freedom at the end of the Civil War they were not granted equality and they were denied many of the basic rights of enjoyed by white Americans. Things reached a boiling point during the 1950’s and 1960’s when powerful activists challenged the United States federal government to uphold their rights as American citizens. As a result, the federal government was forced to intercede with state governments on their behalf in order to restore their rights as guaranteed by the 14th and 15th amendments.
Within a world that has endured so much tragedy, and so many crippling hardships, people are often forced to consider how exactly they are going to handle the adversity that they are faced with. Do they run at it head on and recklessly attempt to deal with it? Do they lose faith with their religion and their God? Or do they simply pray, and hope that amongst all of their misery that something good will come of it and a light will be found in the end? Those are the hard decisions that people are forced to make on the daily, and maybe the questions that we have, or the lack of faith we endure is what makes us stronger at the end of the day.

In American society today, we often represent minority communities, especially the black community, as less than. While we pride ourselves and our country for being a place where we accept all people and give all people opportunities, so many people and races are under-represented and ostracized in society. The book The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin, is written in two essays, “Letter to My Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of Emancipation” and “Down At the Cross Letter from a Region in my Mind”. The Fire Next Time was published in 1963, in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement. Baldwin writes about the relationship between black and white men, including the problems and ways to solve these problems.
In a place completely surrounded by death and destruction, one’s sanity can shatter. In order to keep on going, people may take consolation in the conviction that their lives are guided by an immortal design or purpose, giving them the fortitude to endure and continue. When faced with hopelessness, people may seek consolation in their faith's teachings and values, to make sense of their circumstances. Continuing these practices is holding on to a point in their lives where they were not under these circumstances. The belief in God is the one remaining constant in their lives when everything they hold dear was taken away from them.

To Build A Fire is a short tragic tale by Jack London that narrates about a man’s last days on the earth. The story’s protagonist is passing through the sub-freezing land of the Yukon when he becomes the victims of an unforgiving and harsh force of nature. Before embarking on the journey, the man is warned against walking alone on such severe weather conditions and even if his instincts also warn him, he decides to ignore all the signs and his conscience and to follow his ego. He makes several attempts to light a fire but does not make it. It is after several attempts that the man finally gives in to the forces of nature and awaits his now evident death.
