In The Murders Of The Clutter Family, Perry Edward Smith was one of two ex-convicts who murdered the Clutter family in Holcomb, Kansas, on November 15, 1959. In the chapter one of the Scarlet letter, written on the 1850s, the author Nathaniel Hawthorne utilizes the tones of suspense and somber. This two tones, refer to the description of the setting Hawthorne was trying to imply, by describing it as a frightful and dark place. Not only that, but the tones can also be determined throughout the entire chapter making the story more interesting and intriguing. Hawthorne begins the chapter by deploying a third person point of view, which creates a suspense during the introduction. Neil Gaiman weaves this throughout his novel by showing how Bod is destined to fight the Jacks. The gothic theme of entrapment is commonly used across various pieces of literature. Entrapment is the idea of being contained by something either physically, mentally, or emotionally.

It is influenced by countless ideas, including religious themes around this time period, and usually reflects on the characteristics of the people living in the Victorian era.
After an unsuccessful attempt to drown the child, the killer kills him with a sword and buries the body in the garden. He is now scared that the body will somehow come back to life and also confesses. The Plot in both stories are based on a murder, and in both, the murderer tries to conceal evidence of the murder but still they are discovered. Edgar Allan Poe was an American author and editor, who was best known for his works in Gothic literature. Most of Poe’s stories deal with the theme of horror, as was reflected in Poe’s life as it was full of tragedy involving the loss of many of his beloved wives and mothers. The following stories are amongst Poe’s most celebrated stories; The Tell Tale Heart - a short story told by an unreliable narrator who persuades the readers of his sanity, while telling of a murder he committed. The Masque of the Red Death - a story that illustrates Prince Prospero’s efforts to eschew the dangerous plague by hiding in his castle, where he throws a party.
Edgar Allen Poe was a well-known American author, born on January 19, 1809, who wrote the story “The Angel of Odd” (Merriam Webster 1). Poe has always been a popular writer who writes poems, short stories, and novellas with “an aesthetic of obscureism” (Garrison Jr. 1). “The Angel of Odd” is a short story about a man who believes that all the odd occurrences and odd deaths that he sees in the paper are simply made up. The man is later visited by the Angel of Odd who shows him that odd things can happen with bad luck. The main literary devices that this story demonstrates are irony, symbolism, and suspense.

Poe’s characters and stories were represented often by the rejection of the rational, a characteristic of the Romantic era, exchanging it with intuition and emotions. In "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", considered the first detective story, Poe introduces us to Auguste Dupin. Dupin, throughout the story, tries to constantly think like the criminal, following his intuition in order to resolve the crime. The display of emotions in his stories is what draws the attention of the reader.
