The Queen of Spades was originally a short story written in 1833 by am author by the name of Alexander Pushkin. The story received great praise and his work helped to inspire the tradition of Russian music via the Opera. This is because nearly 60 years later, the story was produced as an opera that premiered in 1890. Expanding outside of Russia, the film became a popular name that was also filmed various times. Fast forward another 59 years and the most distinguished rendition was filmed and directed by Thorold Dickinson in the year 1949. The acclaimed “fantasy horror”film takes place in St. Petersburg in the year 1806. In most film noirs bars, night clubs and lounges are scenes of action. In The Queen of Spades the most action occurs in the bar like setting where the gypsies are often seen singing and dancing while the men play cards and drink the night away. The first major action scene occurs here when the drunken soldiers are yelling at Herman and questioning his existence in the bar. They exclaim, “Why are you even here? You don 't even gamble like the rest of us! Are you some sort of spy?”. Herman responds that he simply cannot afford to play as he is poor and must save his money. However, his character drastically changes because in the last scene he puts his gambling skills to the test. And it is in the gambling bar that he bets his entire savings and winds up losing it all.
