Nancy A. Hewitt said in “From Seneca Falls to Suffrage? Reimagining a ‘Master’ Narrative of U.S. Women’s History” that, “In recent years, historical studies have revealed the multifaceted movements that constituted woman 's rights campaigns in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Yet one narrative continues to dominate understandings of the period” (15). This is a perfect example of an alternative histories, which is when important events are so underreported that we are left with one side of history, that doesn’t allow most to know the full history of the women’s rights
Dubois and Judith Wellman are both looking at the women’s right movement. Dubois discusses the leading historical reforms, meetings, and individuals that led up to the Sceneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention in 1848. Wellman looks at who the one hundred individuals were that signed the Declaration of Sentiments during The Sceneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention and why they chose to sign it. Wellman examines the connections and the networks between all of the individuals involved at the convention and what influences those connections had on the Declaration of Sentiments. Wellman uses a variety of resources to come to conclusions on her questions presented.
Canadian Women & the Struggle for Equality by Lorna R. Marsden provides a deeper understanding of the struggle women went through to achieve gender equality. She describes in detail the long and increasingly difficult journey that women went through and are still going through to accomplish gender equality. Throughout the book she has certain strengths and few but substantial weaknesses in her writing. While she does provide the reader with plenty of information she fails to make the information relatable and interesting, or to make it stand out from other books that were written on the same topic. Nevertheless, she does provide a lot of supporting evidence for her thesis and thoughtfully organizes the book by theme.
The Women’s Rights Movement originated from the public protest meeting in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. Many at the meeting were skeptical about the demands being made to allow women to exercise the right to participate in government and vote. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the primary organizer of the meeting, remembered that many attending, including radical Lucretia Mott, thought that the demand was too far advanced for the time. They believed that advocating for political equality was also “too morally questionable” to include in this movement
Indian Women’s Rights in Comparison to Canada I will be comparing women’s rights, particularly occupational, and reproductive rights in urban India to Canadian women’s rights of employment, reproductive rights. I chose the topic of women’s rights in India since it is known as a patriarchal country, where inequality and gender issues of women are more frequently seen in comparison to Canada. The thesis statement is that “Urban India still faces the issue of women’s employment and reproductive rights, however, there are resources such as the ‘Action Aid’s Young Urban Women’ program to help support these poor women living in poverty in India. The economic and cultural variations such as caste and religious discriminations leading to women’s restricted mobility after reaching adolescence are known as major negative influences that contribute to the inequality of women’s rights in India as opposed to the Canadian society, which is slightly different to Indian in terms of religious, and cultural factors. In doing so, it also set the agenda for equality reforms in politics, education access, women’s suffrage, economic liberty, and an equal role in religious life. The Seneca Falls Convention and its major document made public to the nation the problem of the oppressive rules that placed women in a largely uncontested role of subservience. It is clear to note that Stanton’s declaration and the unprecedented convention from which it arose has carried other important implications for women’s status in American life. While it was not initially received well, this public assembly could still inspire others to organize similar functions throughout the country. Another place of consideration would be the role of men in the feminist movement as a considerable amount of them participated in the convention.

Canada treatment of women was in the 1911 to 1929 was unethical. The Famous Five, were five women from Alberta driven by the urges to demolish sexism and prejudices in Canada. Canada during 1911 to 1929 was a critical moment for women’s rights. Life was difficult during these years as women had no push or pull in politics therefore Canadian women had no say in their conventional life. The famous five contributed to putting laws and acts in place that prevents abandonment and abuse by husbands.
A few years later, after the widespread voices that ascended women into recognition for change, movements had begun to assemble in towards greater equality. Women had no place to be involved in political affairs, and as recognition started to manifest, in 1848, “the first women’s rights convention is held in Seneca Falls, New York.” (Imbornoni n.d, para. 2). The purpose of this convention was to acknowledge the equality between both genders and allow voting rights for women. This was the first women engagement into American Politics, it’s also the “story of women’s struggle to be treated as human beings –“separate and equal” “(Lynne 24).
This was only the beginning of women’s activism, but it is inarguably a change that sparked reform that continues

Radical feminism arose out of the political activism present during the civil rights movement in the United States in the 1960s and soon spread to Canada and other parts of the western world (Reichert, 2016a) Whereas first wave feminists sought to fit women into existing structures, second wave feminists turned their lens to the public versus private sphere of women’s lives in the 1970s, particularly as they related to sexuality and violence. Domestic violence against women was perceived as a public issue rather than a personal family matter (Reichert, 2016b). In her 1975 article, “Feminism in the French Revolution,” Jane Abray provides a dismissive view of women’s movements during the Revolution. In the article, Abray emphasizes the failures of revolutionary feminism. In her opinion, the most compelling reason for revolutionary feminism’s failure was that it was a minority interest that remained inaccessible to the majority of French women who accepted their inferior status to men. Abray suggests additional reasons for the movement’s “abject failure,” including its inability to garner support from the male leaders of the Revolution, the disreputable characters of the feminist leaders, the strategic errors made by the movement’s leaders, and a “spirit of the times” that emphasized the nuclear family
It was an enormous social change for women to take part in public decision making, and gave them a voice to abolish unjust laws. The suffragettes in Australia argued that they were intelligent enough to vote, that it was unfair for them to be taxed without representation, and that they were equal to men therefore should have equal rights. In contrary, the suffragettes’ opponents alleged that women already had indirect power through manipulating their husbands and father’s voting choices at the ballot box, that women were equal but different and that women could not fulfil the duties of citizenship therefore should not vote. The suffragettes encouraged people to sign their petition, as well as held meeting and debates in order to gain supporters. Women in Australia used civil methods of protest, and didn’t adapt the more radical methods used by suffragettes in other countries.
