James Queally and Joe Mozingo on the article “Feds fault San Francisco police for violence against minorities and recommend 272 reforms” explains how law enforcement is racially biased towards minorities. Queally and Mozingo support their claim by mentioning the rise of police brutality against Blacks and Latinos and describing the type slurs used when law enforcement are referring to minorities amongst their fellow colleague. The authors’ purpose is to show the reader the type of way law enforcement is unfair to people of color and different cultures. The authors write in a serious tone to those seeking to end police brutality.
He asserts that “Something happens to people in law enforcement...after years of police work, officers often can’t help but be influenced by the cynicism they feel.” He rationalizes but does not deny, the law enforcement’s aggressive actions that the people of color may have seen or experienced. This method of pathos not only diversifies but also fortifies his thesis that there is evidence of racial profiling; however, he once again give reason for their skepticism to execute his primary purpose. Overall, dedicating three of his four “hard truths” to justify the actions of the law enforcement is crucial to his argument as a whole because his audience may have portrayed them differently
Race is not a predictive model for federal educational loan debt, therefore the model must be rejected. Factors that could have affect this model is the age of the population of the sample size. The respondents being born between 1980 and 1984 would have attended college in the late 1990’s to early 2000’s, one can argue that the reason race is not a predictive model based on the data is because the data is not relevant enough to present graduates. The student loan debt crisis is a more recent phenomena that requires more analysis to fully understand what factors exacerbate and contribute to the issue.
African Americans Face a War on More Than One Front America has been known throughout history as the home of the free, but that freedom did not come without struggles. While the Revolutionary War and the fight for abolition represent famous past struggles, there are still fights for freedom taking place in America today, specifically in the African American community. African Americans have struggled unnecessarily in America, in particular with police and drugs. The indifference between African Americans and police, although widely publicized recently, is not a recent problem.
The issue group I’ve been assigned to weighs in on race relations and law enforcement. My specific stakeholder involves cops perceptive. There have been many cases where cops feel attacked, and are feared by the public for many reasons. I want to know what the police in general think about this subject that has been so prominent in our lives and in the media lately. Introduction The New Orleans Police Department is an organization that struggled long before Hurricane Katrina made landfall in August of 2005. Many residents feared the department and some would say that “the department was infected by a culture of discrimination, abuse, and lawlessness” (Ramsey, 2015). Beginning in the 1980’s, police brutality became a major issue in the city, which still continues now, almost 12 years later. During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, it seemed that the situation was only worse.
The leaders of these organizations need create a plan that develops and changes the perception and policing habits of their officers. Better policing of communities will leave foster better and lasting relations with residents. For example, take the Portland, Oregon police department plan to address the practice of racial profiling. The 61 page document that lists in detail a way to combat the use of racial profiling. It covers a “Tools for Tolerance” training, Training to develop officers interpersonal relationships and the issue of race.
In Table 2, they gathered data on racial differences facing the police. One of the questions they asked was “Just your impression, are blacks in your community treated less fairly than whites in dealing with the police, such as traffic incidents?” Table 1 and Table 2 together supported racial splits on their personal thoughts and conflicts with the police. Racial profiling has become a “hot topic” for researchers as well as for politicians and by now it is likely that most citizens are at least aware of the common accusations of racial bias pitted against law enforcement (Cochran & Warren, 2013). Communities of color are being discriminated against and racially profiled by white police officers for any suspicion of criminal activities. It has been widely assumed by policy makers and citizens alike that allegations of racial profiling are mostly associated with the policing practices of white officers and their treatment of racial and ethnic minorities (Cochran & Warren, 2013). Random sample surveys were conducted in Seattle, Washington by telephone, which asked citizen’s various questions concerning their feelings towards police.
