Macbeth (full title The Tragedy of Macbeth), believed to have been written between 1599 and 1606 by William Shakespeare. Throughout its multi-year history, Macbeth has remained one of Shakespeare’s most enduring and popular plays. Half the length of Hamlet, it is the shortest of Shakespeare’s tragedies. Macbeth sustains the title of “an intensity of tragedy” stated by numerous scholars, which never lets up from the play’s dark beginning to its ambiguous conclusion. The stage history of Macbeth has been masked in mystery and superstition over the years and adaptations have incorporated that.

One way Shakespeare explores appearance and reality is through MacBeth's early thoughts with the witches prophecies. In an aside MacBeth says, “My thought, whose murder yet is fantastical” but then carries on to say to Banquo, “If chance will have me king, why chance may crown me without my stir.” This shows that though MacBeth is thinking about killing Duncan, it is not what he says to Banquo. The reality of his thoughts are very different to what he shows other people. In the first quote, the caesura breaks up the sentence giving it a jittery and excited feel.

Macbeth is a tragic hero because he starts by being loyal and trustworthy, develops a tragic flaw that leads to his downfall, and he redeems a small measure of himself before he dies.
