A common misconception of our time is that formal education is required for success in life. There is a phrase that sums up this humanistic mindset that states, “the more you learn, the more you earn” (Tamir, 2011, p. 398). From this point of view, the focus of education appears to be making money. This certainly appeals to the materialistic way of thinking that is prevalent in today’s society. After all, more money to buy things makes humankind happier right? The moral absolutism taught in the Bible helps people make the right decisions throughout life and helps to keep them from the pain of moral failings. A 2013 study indicates, “Individuals are more likely to engage in immoral behaviors when exposed to moral relativism compared to moral absolutism (Rai & Holyoak, 2013, p. 995). Instead of restraining Christians from doing what will make them happy, God’s word frees them to live fuller lives without fear of entanglement in immorality. The line between right and wrong becomes sharper and more defined as Christians expand their understanding of God’s will in their lives and the world around. God’s word says that He actually transforms and renews minds through His word to make Christians ready and able to resist conforming to the world (Rom. 12:2). The resulting clarity of thinking leads to confidence in God (Prov. 3:5-6) and the confusion caused by moral relativism is less of a factor. Christians are able to spend more time thinking about issues that matter instead of trying to wade through the moral morass of worldly thinking.
