Throughout our history our society struggles with inequality. Sexism and racism still addresses like class, gender or other dominating classifications a structural problem in our United States culture. In Jean Baker Miller’s essay “Domination and Subordination” she discusses the temporary and permanent inequality. Miller states that the temporary inequality is a relationship between a dominated individual who explains and is a teacher to the subordinated individual. In contrast her explanation of the permanent inequality is the relationship of different individuals who always will be unequal.
Focus question: To cull or not to cull great white sharks Great white sharks are the biggest predatory fish in the ocean and they can grow to about 15 feet in size, although larger than 20 feet have been seen. Their name comes from the white underbellies of the sharks and their bodies are designed to blend in with the seabed. The great whites have powerful tails which makes them excellent swimmers that can travel up to 24 km/h. They have many rows of triangular shaped teeth and have a great sense of smell and even their body can sense electromagnetic fields produced by animals. They mainly eat sea lions, small toothed whales and sea turtles.

Judith Ortiz Cofer: The Myth of the Latina Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria The Myth of the Latina Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria by Judith Ortiz Cofer is a story covering Latina Women in America. Judith is from Puerto Rico and for much of the passage, discusses her life as a Latina and how she would be judged for doing common people activity. She would be ridiculed for her clothes and labeled illegal or a prostitute.
Gruesz reviews the new Norton Anthology of Latino Literature (NALL). She notes that as Kenneth Warren's argument and the recent history of African American tradition building it refers to can help people appreciate the Latino literature. She states that Norton is “hobbled by the lack of any prior powerful literary-historical narrative with which to contend”(Gruesz). She argues, however, that the NALL “would raise a skeptical eyebrow at the repeated characterizations of NALL as a “treasure” and a “celebration” of the ethnoracial groups whose genius they index”(Gruesz). She argues that the Latino literature is viewed as an instrumental tool into the management into culture, shows a sign of times, and is is accommodating.
In the reading, “(Re)constructing Latinidad: The challenge of Latina/o studies.” it explains the challenge that is, defining what it is to be a Latino in America. In the reading, it gives reasons as to why there is a challenge, examples include how diverse the Latino community is in America and how others in America perceive the Latino community. After reading the article, I saw two main ideas that Aparicio had and they were; redefining what it means to be Latino in America and to show that there are issues in the Latino community that need to be addressed. Then I will provide my reaction based on the ideas I got out of the reading.

For example, I have been labeled Mexicana, Chicana, Latina, and Hispanic. Honestly, I don't know what exactly I coincide with. Every one of these words tends to have some truth about me, but maybe not the whole truth.
Hispanics overcoming challenges in the U.S Ever since Hispanics settled in the United States, there has been many problems for them. Some examples of these problems could be legal obstacles, educational barriers, racial stereotypes, and culture acceptance. But there are also ways to end all of these negative things on Hispanics, like organizations to help Hispanics with education, or groups that are against all of the negative stuff. Hispanics are having a problem with legal obstacles.
Gender inequality is not a new topic. Throughout history, women have faced significant sexist discrimination starting with being denied basic rights enjoyed by men. In many societies, women have been categorized as inferior to men. Greek poet, Homer, consistently highlighted this ‘women are inferior’ theme throughout his writings of The Iliad and The Odyssey. Even though this degradation of women has currently been brought to light in the 21st century, it continues to remain a serious issue.
For centuries, women have been exploited by the society. Events of women being prohibited from doing things like voting or working and being forced to behave the way it is considered to be socially acceptable have been jotted down in history. Until today women are still viewed as the weaker sex. In some countries, women are regarded less than human and are treated like slaves. Khaled Hosseini goes into the oppression of women in his novel A Thousand Splendid Suns.
Stereotypes are “simplified and standardized conceptions or images invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group,” (Dictionary.com). They are often offensive and highly discriminatory. In The Myth of the Latin Woman by Judith Ortiz Cofer, Cofer denounces the American stereotypes of Latinas by establishing her credibility with personal experiences, manipulating the audience’s emotions, and employing imagery. Cofer begins her piece with the establishment of her credibility via ethos. She opens The Myth of the Latin Woman with a recollection, stating that “[I was] on a bus trip to London from Oxford University where I was earning graduate credits one summer,” (370).
Exploitation has been evident in history since the beginning. A significant example of exploitation in the United States was the practice of slavery in which a dominant group, white males, enslaved and exploited labor from African Americans and indigenous peoples. Alongside this historical exploitation lies prevalent examples of everyday life. Even today, exploitation is utilized in the form of sweatshops that produce a significant percentage of the clothing seen in stores. Marginalization
Stereotyping is defined as fixing or oversimplifying an image or idea of individuals of a certain race, gender etc., however, those assumptions may or may not be true. Stereotypes are hazy generalizations influenced by a number of sources such as, past experiences, media, friends and family. The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met A Girl Named Maria written by Judith Ortiz Cofer offers a philosophical reflection and personal insight into ethnic stereotypes. The author 's assertion- that the media promotes stereotypes- still applies today and is justified through her personal experiences told with logos, ethos, and pathos as well as through my personal experiences.
