The Roaring Twenties was an action packed decade full of change. Just before was the First World War: a dreadful, sombre point in history, but also the start of a new nation. The war impacted the country’s political decisions with their recently obtained autonomy, a boom in the economy as more goods began to be bought and sold, and the roles of women in society drastically changed compared prior to the war. Life in Canada during the Twenties was a whole new world. As a result of the First World War, Canada had many political, economic and social aspects which the country had to adjust to. During World War One, new industries were created, which in result, meant that more people had jobs. To accommodate to all the workers, industrialized systems of production were introduced, and as an outcome, production rates rose and therefore, there was an economic boom. The Canadian Encyclopedia states “...Industrialization increased and became larger and more mechanized with...the embrace of moving assembly line and larger factories,” (Anastakis) proving that the urbanized factories were a great concept in terms of production rates. Along came consumerism. With a lot of new products being introduced, it of course meant that people were going to buy them. “As Canada modernized, consumerism played in an important role and segmentation,” (Belisle, 11), meaning that buying the best products would make one look wealthier. More products were being sold which meant companies were making a mass amount of profit during this time in period. Finally, in order to attract those customers, industries and companies used several forms of media to spread the word about their products. “Consumption has been, in Victoria de Grazia’s words, obsessively gendered female.”,(Moore, 3). During the war., women also got the opportunity to vote and their involvement is carried out through the Roaring Twenties. In 1921, Agnes Macphail was elected to the house of commons and was one of the first women to be elected to the Legislative assembly and also the main representative of her gender in politics for seventeen years (Crowley i). This was an iconic point in history for women because government was a male dominated work area. Many saw Macphail as an inspiration, especially during the 1920’s. Later on in the decade though, it was established that women were able to vote, be voted into the House of Commons, but could not be appointed senate due to the fact that “...Women were not legally recognized as ‘Persons’” (McClung). Five women, also known as the Famous Five went to the Supreme Court to gain their rights as human beings. On October 18, 1929, women gained the title of “persons” and “...Acquired the right to exercise official functions, to attend university, and to practice a liberal trade.” (Cruickshank and Marshall).
