As in the 1950’s, new products such as dishwashers and washer and dryers were mass produced and this caused wives to pressure husbands to buy the fancy new items. And this push was not limited to just buying items, as it extended into the push for new innovation and technologies. The hunger for new items and the need for new ones propelled 50’s consumerism even further. However the 20’s consumerism was different. Rather than developments in individual items propelled consumerism, 50’s consumerism was driven by mass changes in industry.
The 1920s, also known as the “Roaring Twenties”, was an exhilarating time full of significant social, economic, and political change. For most Americans, it was full of the prosperity and peace that followed World War I. Middle-class life was full of leisure and class. For others, this time period was filled with hardships and challenges. Many immigrants and African-Americans faced discrimination and segregation from the rest of the United States. One notable, positive aspect of the 1920s was its booming economy.
America began to prosper in the 1920’s because of industrial production being up, wages were rising, and the unemployment rates were low. After World War I America was the world’s leading economic power, because of all the technological changes happening in the industrial companies. Technological changes were happening in many industries, for example Henry Ford began to make his cars on an assembly line, which enabled him to sale more cars and cheaper products. America also had a lot of natural resources, oil being one of them, which is essential in cars. Oil was also very abundant so it sold for cheap prices.
Between 1865 and 1920, the United States became the world's leading industrial capitalist nation. Two principal obstacles blocked the way, each of them arising from capitalism itself, a growing working class which increasingly insisted on sharing the fruits of industrial production and competition among existing firms. The United States government was keen on helping emerging industries as these industries help stabilize the economy. These industries slowly turned into monopolies by removing existing competition. Monopolies set prices at a level that would earn profits, but not so high as to antagonize customers.

Hodge talks about Widow Pratt throughout the chapters, she is not the main character. The book is also based on a historiography, which is the study of historical writing. The theme of the book is on gentility, the social superiority by genteel manners, behavior, or appearance. There is also the way of being genteel, the way to act proper.

Combined this with American inventions such as Henry Ford’s assembly line and Americans had money to spend (Schultz, 2013). Introduction The Declaration of Independence of 1776 asserted that all men are created equal and are endowed with certain unalienable rights among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. However, the exhaustion of farm land by poor agricultural planning and the introduction of the assembly line reversed the flow in the 1920s. They helped to turn the migration of the people back to the city. Many farmers returned to the cities to work for such leaders of industry as Ford and Rockefeller. The American Dream indicated not about a better life but about wealth.
During the Roaring Twenties, consumerism began to rise as people became more comfortable with spending and buying what they wanted, even if they didn’t need it. According to U.S. History, “New products made household chores easier and led to more leisure time. Products previously too expensive became affordable. New forms of financing allowed every family to spend beyond their current means” (U.S. History). Many middle class families were taking advantage of this and “replicating” first class lifestyles.
The 1920s were the first years of the new, modern America, with a growing consumer society and new ideas and rules. America saw many changes throughout this decade, including but not limited to social, economic and political changes. Throughout this time, new values were made with the growth of new forms of entertainment and education. After the Progressive Era, the ideas of political figures changed with a new focus on conservative politics and less labor issues. With the new ability for people to buy other products than basic needs, their money went to new inventions, causing new industries to grow.
The high demand for goods in the 1920s led
As World War II came to an end, the United States entered the 50s. This decade became a major influential time that brought many cultural and societal changes. Categories such as the economy, where a boom in new products increased, the technology world which incorporated new medicines and computers, entertainment when the television became popular and the overall lifestyles that Americans adapted to. All of these topics reshaped and created several advancements throughout society during the 1950s.
The 1920s carried much change in society. Some of these changes were more rights for women, jazz music, and prohibition. The people of the 1920s were disillusioned by society lacking in idealism and vision, sense of personal alienation, and Americans were obsessed with materialism and outmoded moral values (The Roaring Twenties).Cultural changes were strongly influenced by the destruction of World War I ending 1918. America needed to recover and with it youth rebelled against the norms of the older generations.

A “cultural civil war” ensured as some supported the resulting “liberation” from America’s past, while others objected to the “decaying” morals that supposedly accompanied such changes.
1920s Advertising During the 1920s, advertisement started to increase and expand. Many ideas and tactics were used to lure the attention of the consumers. After World War I, America started to grow with a stable and growing economy. This flourishment made many American's live out the 1920s in prosperity.
The 1920’s, or “The Roaring 20’s”, was a decade that witnessed exciting social changes. It was a time of prosperity and dissipation, bootleggers and jazz dancers, and most importantly, it was a decade of The Prohibition Era. The Prohibition Era is basically an era which banned the manufacture, transportation, import and export, and the sale of alcoholic beverages. It was meant to reduce crime, corruption, and social problems and increase the overall hygiene of America. However, this social and political experiment failed.
