In the article, “The Last Meow,” by Burkhard Bilger argues that people are spending a lot of money on their pets rather than spending it the right way. It is estimated Americans spend billions of dollars a year on veterinary care. Bilger believes our love affair with our pets and spending on animal has gotten out of control . American spend nearly three times as much as federal government spends on welfare grants. Although pet care is very important , I agree with Bilger that this has gotten out of control because pet owner spent humorous amount of money for their pet unnecessary things, pet owners are giving the life and luxury to their pets and many pets do not get the services some pet’s get.
In today’s television based society, image is valued much more than thought, leisure more than work, and reading has lost its appreciation. However, in the early years of America, things were drastically different. Before television, the printed word had a monopoly over all public communication. In these chapters of his book, Neil Postman illuminates eighteenth and nineteenth century America, a society where print ruled over culture, conversation, and people. Early America was a culture totally immersed in print based epistemology.
Have you ever had a dog which you met at a street? It wasn’t a special kind of dog, but it wanted to eat the ice-cream cone you were eating. Henry Huggins, written by Beverly Clearly, is a exciting story of Henry getting a dog which he met on a street, on his way going home. This story of getting a great dog is important to our generation of young children because it teaches the values of friendship and love between a boy and his dog, even though they make some trouble together. I personally admire the character of Henry and Ribsy and feel that this is a great book to inspire children who have pets.

In my community, there is a real big problem with the amount of stray dogs on the streets and city animal shelters are so full that there is little they can do to help. There isn’t much funding from the government for animal shelters in Puerto Rico, which makes it a little harder to clean up the streets. And not only is it dangerous to have a large amount of stray dogs in your area, but also could be harmful to the health of the people. The kill rate for the animal shelters in Puerto Rico are at 97%, which are ridiculously high but still does nothing to solve the issue. My goal is to help my community by providing the alternatives to solving the matter of the amount of stray dogs while also lowering the kill rate for those dogs that have not been properly treated or adopted.
