The Role Of Humanity In Koushun Takami's Battle Royal

As seen in a previous blog post regarding Mad Max the patriarchal men in that universe are to blame for their world turning into a dystopia, however, humanity, in general, is portrayed as the problem in Koushun Takami’s Battle Royale. In Battle Royal, a randomly picked high-school class is forced to compete in a program in which they must battle each other until there is one remaining winner alive, and this is enforced by the government. This shows a dystopian universe created around the idea of hatred for your own species. The abhorrence towards humanity is also seen in Jonathon Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels through the symbolism of the Yahoos as humanity. Furthermore, a similar representation is seen Joss Whedon’s Firefly (Joss Whedon, 2002)
