John Steinbeck wrote The Grapes of Wrath in 1939. The novel is based about the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. The Great Depression and the dust bowl took place in the 1930’s. Jim Casy has a significant role in The Grapes of Wrath because he is a Christ figure, he is the Joad’s family friend, and he sacrifices himself. Jim Casy is a Christ figure throughout the book due to his previous role as a Reverend as well as his initials being J.C. He has the same initials as Jesus Christ as well as paraphrasing Christ’s last words. Christ said, “Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do”, and Jim Casy said, “You don' know what you're a-doin.” Casy was the Joad’s family friend, staying with them throughout book. He is mostly been with the Joad’s through all their hard times. Casy says,” I know this—a man got to do what he got to do. I can’t tell you. I don’t think they’s luck or bad luck.
