In the story “The Sign of the Cat”, the themes everybody needs help and learning from mistakes really show up throughout the story. Both show how Chet developed as a character. The first theme, everybody needs help, show up the most. In the very beginning of the story, Chet and his grandma are taking in three men who knocked on their door for a place to stay. These three men don’t have jobs, shelter, food, and money. Chet’s grandma takes in people all the time, and these men are no different. She tells Chet that her dad is just like them, but he refuses to believe that. He thinks his dad wears neatly pressed clothes, is well fed, and has showered and shaved, unlike those men. In the very beginning of the story, Chet is angry at the men who come to their homes. They take all of their already little food. He can see that his grandma is worried about money and how much food they’re getting, he blames it on the men. He wants to help her. Later on, Chet finds out why so many people keep coming to their door. One of the men explains “the hobo code” to him. They mark down certain signs on people’s doors or gates to show whether on not this is a good place to stay. On their door, somebody put a cat. The cat shows that good people live here. Chet later goes outside and draws three diagonal lines instead. This means that it’s not a good place. He doesn’t want any more people to come by. Finally, Chet learns that what he did was wrong and unfair when his dad comes home. He finds out that his dad also had to rely on homes with cats written on them to survive. He knew that he should help people, because there were people that helped his dad. Chet later went back and fixed his mistake. In the story, the author had to use inner thinking and first person narrative to show how Chet progressed through these themes. Chet narrirated the whole story, so we get to know how he really
