In the book, The Hunger Games, one of the main events is when Katniss volunteers for her sister, Prim, to participate in the annual Hunger Games. After reading this event, I was very surprised. I noticed that Katniss surprised herself by saying she would volunteer, but then quickly recovered once she remembered that the reaping would be shown on television. “…this is upsetting me and I don’t want to cry. When they televise the replay of the reapings tonight, everyone will make note of my tears, and I’ll be marked as an easy target.
Propaganda is used to control the citizens of society. During the reaping in The Hunger Games, they show a video from the Capitol and it is a propaganda video. It tells them that if they don’t perform The Hunger Games, it will end in a war and rebellion against the Capitol. It also tells them that the tributes are heros and help them to remember the people who fought in the rebellion. The rebellion was held by District 13, and they fought against the capitol, so they said that in order to keep peace they must punish all for district thirteen's actions.
Human nature seems to be totally different in the next novel. In The Hunger Games, a male and female are selected out of twelve districts every year to participate in the games. The point of the game is to be placed in an inescapable battlefield and fight to the death. If a character wins the games you receive money, food, a house, and prestige. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are a part of the annual game.
The hunger games is about a woman who volunteers to to win games. Games are were people have to fight against each other. A quote from the movies is “The rules of the hunger games are simple. In punishment for the uprising, each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and one boy, called to participate”.
For most, not being killed by twenty-three other teens in the vicious Hunger Games would be a good thing, right? Not for Katniss Everdeen, who miraculously won the 74th annual Hunger Games alongside her so-called star-crossed lover, Peeta Mellark. The Hunger Games is an annual event of the taking of twenty-four teens from the twelve districts that kill each other until there is one victor. In the second book, Catching Fire, Katniss and Peeta have to travel the districts on the Victory tour to greet the families of the lost tributes. For them, it’s just another thing to remind them of the horror and tragedy of the games.
The reason why the Capitol must obey out of their own will is that it is the strongest way a source of authority can maintain control over the population. President Snow understands this concept because he, himself, said that “hope is the only thing stronger than fear.” Fromm states that thing “cannot be done properly if nothing but fear is behind the obedience,” and this can be applied to the Hunger Games. The first revolts against the practice of the games occurred in the higher up Districts, whose citizens grew up fearing being Reaped, and not in the Capitol, where the games is a form of entertainment. So instead of presenting the games as a punishment the Capitol should fear, the leaders exhibit the death match as a way to bond the whole
In the Hunger Games series, a dystopian future is set up. The government of Panem, The Capitol, holds the wealth of Panem giving it the power to control all districts. In order to enforce this theory, they created the Hunger Games. They suppressed the rights of the citizen’s of Panem and selected their children in order to fight each other do death for survival. These games were created to scare the people and show them who was in charge.
characters are introduced and developed). In the beginning of class I plan to show the entire reaping scene including all the rituals the characters practice before and during the reaping. I included this link of a part of the reaping: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTyyKROkC3E. I decided to use The Hunger Games because it’s a very relatable and interesting movie for a 11th grade class but it’s still age appropriate.
The twelve districts in theory should view the Hunger Games as the necessary tool that keeps Panem from uprising and self-destruction, however, the reception of the Games in the really poor districts clearly shows that the Capitol cannot reform them to think so. Statistically, the poor districts are always the most likely to lose one year’s competition because they lack resources to train tributes and their children are starving. Therefore, the response to the Hunger Games in the poor districts who are on the brink of starvation is the most dramatic. Citizens of districts such as 11 and 12 can only view the Games as injustice because once a child is chosen at the Reaping he or she is evidently doomed to die. There are rare exceptions as the
The Hunger Games trilogy revolves around universal dystopian themes such as :oppression, rebellion, class tension as well as appearance vs. reality ," Collins creates the world that on one hand seems quite improbable and extreme, but on the other, vividly reflects some specific issues in a real world, like social inequalities, ignorance and passivity of the people" (Macanić 7). Oppression is perhaps the most common and prevalent dystopian theme as it serves as a warning against a highly probable dark future through shedding light on the dark side of contemporary trends such as advanced technology and reality TV-shows .The Capitol 's oppression operates on two levels; districts and individuals. The districts in general and districts 11 and 12 in particular have suffered great injustices at the ruthless hands of the Capitol ; however, there is no greater injustice than The Hunger Games themselves not only are the people of Panem forced to surrender their children as tributes for the Capitol 's citizens viewing pleasure for a crime they had no hand in committing ,but they are also forced to watch helplessly as their children are killed in the most brutal of manners .In Catching Fire (2009) , President Snow decrees that " the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors" in order to get rid of Katniss once and for all ,and to further assert the Capitol 's dominance and quell any thoughts of rebellion(172).
There are several themes in the book, each one has a significant meaning to the storyline. The first symbol that describes the theme of abuse of power is government control. The reason that they hold the Hunger Games is because it is a dystopian society and most of the districts are poor and the capitol likes it because it keeps them entertained just because they believe that they are superior to everyone else who lives outside the capitol. To explain this more into detail, the government controls all the districts and all the districts have to follow the rules or else there is a serious punishment.
Responsibility is key to survival in The Hunger Games because you must be responsible and careful before making a decision that depends on your life. “The price of greatness is responsibility.” (Winston Churchill) In The Hunger Games, two tributes, one male and one female under the age of eighteen, must leave their district to go and compete in The Hunger Games. While in the games all twenty-four tributes must fight to the death to entertain their Capital city.
For instance, When the Mayor of district 12 begins to tell the history of Panem at the Reaping, Katniss says, “The rules of the Hunger Games are simple. In punishment for the uprising, each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and one boy, called tributes to participate” (Collins 18). The Hunger Games require tributes from each district as a punishment for the uprising that happened in district 13. This punishment by the Capitol is a way to demonstrate to the people that any efforts of revolt against the system in future would result in severe punishments and deaths. Subsequently in the novel, when Katniss questions about the Avox, Haymitch comments, “Someone who commited a crime.
On the other hand, there is Capitol who has political control in the nation of panem. The story starts when each district must offer a male and female between the ages of 12-18 at a public reaping as a penance for their uprising. The tributes which are male and female shall be delivered to the Capitol and then transferred to a public arena where they will fight with other district until a lone victor remains. This tradition called the hunger games. The story centers was coming from poor district 12 where Katniss and Peeta as their tributes.
