Sacagawea is a Shoshone Indian who helped navigate during the Lewis and Clark expedition. Her name means “Bird Woman’’ in Shoshone and “Boat Launcher’’ in Hidatsa. Sacagawea was born in 1788 Lemhi County, Idaho. Sacagawea is the daughter of the Shoshone chief. She not only helped navigate around the wilderness, but she was a good spokesperson between the Native Americans and explorers.
She left her grieving mother and younger siblings to go to Fort Smith to get money that is owe to her father, and find out how she can legally get justice for her father, Frank Ross’s death. While in Fort Smith, she met Reuben Cogburn, a U.S. Marshall, and offered him pay for him to go capture Tom Chaney and bring him back to Fort Smith to go on trial for the death penalty. She met Laboeuf who also was looking for Tom Chaney for a similar crime. Yes, she was able to convince them to let her go on the expedition to capture Chaney,
Thesis Statement: Lewis and Clark took a journey that would last over 3 years, and made many discoveries about the plants and wildlife, they met Sacagawea who translated and her presents allowed for better communication to open trade with the Indians, but also gained knowledge for maps that would be used for future exploration. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the land gained from the Louisiana Purchase and to let the native American Indians of that area know there was a new presidency. President Jefferson wanted them to record their findings; animals, plants, and locations. She had been trained in her earlier years by her mother to be a healer, which included working with herbs and native plants of the area. It is through this practice, many people hired her to help cure them, other family members, animals, and also to drive of bad curses. She earned a reputation for helping others but was also seen as a danger to the community. She had the knowledge through her books and power of her healing skills which was not very typical of the average women of this time era.
Thomas Jefferson, former president of the United States, helped make a decision in 1803 that would forever change the future of the continental United States of America. Jefferson sent two representatives to Paris in hopes of being able to purchase New Orleans, and ended up learning that they were able to purchase the entire territory of Louisiana for only fifteen million dollars. This deal would later be known as the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson was curious about the completely unknown land that the United States had just purchased, so he decided to hire Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to go on an expedition and explore the land west of the Mississippi. She started helping around the house, but when she figured out that it wasn’t much, she got a job at the fields and even though she had no experience in it she still went ahead and did it. “Mama had been strong for her. Now it was her turn to be strong for Mama. She must show her that she didn’t need to worry anymore.”(p163) Based on this quote, I can tell that she knew she had to be strong and her Mom’s sickness didn’t make her more sad than she already was, it motivated her to be strong for her mom and whatever was coming up.

The success of the Lewis and Clark expedition was important to science, as they made important observations about the land of North America that lead to creation of maps with Captain Clark having the duty of mapping the landscape because of his experience: the result of maps made by Clark became one of the most important achievements of the western exploration. (The Lewis and Clark Expedition, 2016). The scientific information collected on geography, meteorology, cultures, and animal life and plant life were greatly important to the nation (Corps of Discover, 2016). The trip also was partially useful in creating peaceful relations with the American Indians in territories of the Northwest, although not all tribes were accepting of the gestures, giving gifts was important to building peaceful relationships with the American Indians (The Corp of Discovery, 2016).
