Teenage crushes have a very significant role to play in the journey of adolescence. In both romantic and identity crushes, teens feel attracted by a compelling person who grabs their attention. Dr. Carl Pickhardt's “Adolescence and the Teenage Crush” analyzes the negatives, dangers, and positives of having a teenage crush, as well as what a crush can be categorized as. In the article, projecting one’s self onto another person can be categorized into both types of crushes. “The young person projects onto another person idealized attributes” (paragraph 3) Pickhardt wrote about how when adolescents have a general crush, they tend to put their person of interest up on a “pedestal” in their mind. They do this by idolizing them and attaching strong feelings to a “perfectly wonderful image” they have created. In the play, both Romeo and Juliet relate to projecting themselves onto another person's idealized attributes. “Swear by thy gracious self, which is the god of my idolatry.” Juliet is idolizing Romeo, especially when she referred to him as her god while she was daydreaming about a future marriage proposal. Romeo and Juliet’s relationship is usually viewed as the classic love story. The two lovers seemingly fall in love at first sight, making sacrifices for each other and obsessed over the idea of one another. However, there is nothing real about any form of love shared between Romeo and Juliet. The common viewpoint about love at first sight ignored all signs of their complications during their whole romance. The “sacrifices” they made for eachother can only be classified as self harm, because of the risky and even dangerous decisions they made to see each other. Their relationship was full of complications. First of all, they were talking about their marriage the night they met. This proves that both of them were blinded by attraction and too immature to realize that marriage after less than a day of knowing each other was not the right idea, because they simply don't know each other yet. When most people think of the play “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” They think of a classic play about two young lovers who experienced love at first sight.
