To encourage others is often difficult, much less an entire country. In World War I, to encourage the American public, propaganda posters were created. These posters were created to raise nationalism and as well as pride in the American public. One of the most well-known posters created was the Uncle Sam “I Want You” image. This image proved to be so popular in World War I, the image reappeared in World War II. What made the image so well conceived were the many aspects of the Uncle Same poster such as layout, word choice, and color choice. This raises the question, if the text had been created in a different time or place or language or for a different audience, how and why might it differ? Instead of encouraging young American men to join World War I, the poster would encourage young German men to fight in World War II. Germany, during this time period, was under a single party rule, the Nazi regime. The regime controlled almost every aspect of life, anti-Semitic views were placed and a totalitarian state was created. The recreated Uncle Sam poster would most likely mirror the Nazi party’s ideals, while it’s goal would be to encourage the support of young German men. In the remodeled poster the image of Uncle Sam would most likely be replaced with a prominent figure of the Nazi party such as Adolf Hitler. But if Uncle Sam was a representation of America, the image of Uncle Sam image could also be replaced with a personified version of Germany. This personified version would most likely be an older man with blonde hair and blue eyes. Adolf Hitler saw the traits of blonde hair and blue eyes favorable and superior thus why these traits were given to the personified country. The clothes worn by the man would most likely be a black military jacket, with a red armband displaying an anti-Semitic swastika. The colors black and red would be chosen due to those being the colors of the German flag. This would be to raise a sense of German nationalism. The man instead of pointing would have one hand raised towards the reader of the poster. The reason as to why is because the extending of the right arm was a German salute that displayed loyalty towards Hitler. This would place the Nazi party greater than the individual viewing the poster. The young German man would have a greater reason to join the German Army, to follow the wants of the political party. The lines “I WANT YOU FOR U.S. ARMY” would also change. Obviously the ending of the iconic line would change to the “GERMAN ARMY.” The “I WANT YOU” would most likely alter to “HITLER WANTS
