The Root Of Evil In Shakespeare's Macbeth

Throughout William Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, the idea that Macbeth turned evil because of an evil inside himself all along is mentioned frequently. Even though Macbeth did have something within him, with closer analysis, the people around Macbeth ignited the spark of evil in him. The three witches that Macbeth encountered and his wife, Lady Macbeth, were the ones who stirred an evil in him. The witches were able to make Macbeth question his role as a general with their prophecies and make Macbeth act on them, while Lady Macbeth pushed Macbeth to go forth with his evil plans. Although some could argue that Macbeth possessed a wickedness within him all along, it was the witches and Lady Macbeth who pushed Macbeth to do the sinister acts he committed.
Many people think Macbeth had always been evil and from an brief analysis of him, it does seem that Macbeth had done some wicked acts on his own accord. When Macbeth defeated the rebel Macdonwald and his army, Macbeth was nothing less of violent when he decided how to kill Macdonwald. The captain of the Scottish army claimed that:
For brave Macbeth (well he deserves that name), /
Disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel, /
Which smoked with bloody execution, /
Like Valor’s minion, carved out his passage /
Till he faced the slave; /
Which ne’er shook hands, nor bade farewell to him, /

Macbeth is afraid of Banquo because he is not safe as king if his friend is going to be suspicious. The only way for Macbeth to keep his crown is to get rid of any potential threats and his own friend is one. Macbeth murdered Banquo without the influence of those around him telling him to commit this act. This does suggest that Macbeth had an evil growing inside him before the impact of other people.
