It goes without saying that we truly are living in a momentous time period, brimming with new ideas and values that are leading us all towards further change and progression. Yet, despite this positivity, there is also the tribulation that has transpired throughout the years. As human beings continue to endure the countless misfortunes and calamities that have been thrown in our path, thus resulting in fear and negativity pervading our environment, we have overwhelmingly managed to stay sanguine about our future. For this reason, if I were to assign a premature name for this time period, it would be the Sanguine Era. First, before I delve into this topic, allow me to provide a quick refresher on the adjective that I chose to embody this time period. In short, the word “sanguine,” according to Oxford Dictionaries, refers to the feeling of being “optimistic or positive, especially in an apparently bad or difficult situation”. Now, with that established, let us move forward onto the first aspect of our Sanguine Era – the political climate. Although it is difficult to properly encapsulate the United States’ political climate in just a few sentences, as it has always been fairly divided with groups constantly vying for control, I believe that the best current example that demonstrates our sanguinity amid a divisive political climate is the mass shooting that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. From my point of view, this unfortunate event is a prime example of how, despite battling the effects of this horrific incident, individuals – particularly the Parkland students – have been able to keep their chins up.
