The Scramble for Africa took place in 1880-1900. This was a period of rapid colonization of the African continent by European powers. There were many reasons that lead to the Scramble for Africa. Most of these reasons took place in Europe rather than Africa. Some of the things that caused the Scramble for Africa were, end of the slave trade, capitalism, and medical reasons. Economically this occurred because Africa is rich in resources such as gold, diamond, and other minerals. So basically what this “Scramble for Africa” was the competition between European powers for colonies in Africa. The availability of raw materials and labor meant that most of Africa was invaded and divided up. The Berlin Conference of 1884 regulated European colonization
