The story begins with the introduction of Mary Lennox; described as thin, ill and ugly. Mary’s mother, Mrs. Lennox, could care less for her and sets for a nanny to care for her needs and wants. Mary does not know what it feels to be loved and has become very cold hearted. Turns out that an epidemic of Cholera spreads through the small Indian village. Because of Mrs. Lennox selfish ways she insisted in staying in town to attend a dinner party that night. As the cholera starts spreading, Mary’s nanny is one of the first to be affected. Mary then finds out about her Ayah’s death and its not really affected by it. One day Mary shuts her self in her room, and stays away from everything and everyone. But, Martha doesn’t think that’s possible. Mary goes out once again to the garden and finds Ben they sit and talk for a while. Mary asks questions about the secret garden but Ben doesn’t say much. Mary approaches to the wall of the secret garden, the robin follows. Mary tries to talk to the bird, and then leads her to an area of dirt which Mary looks closely and notices a key buried deep. Mary thinks that might be the key to the secret garden. Mary is now determined to find the door. Being able to have access to this garden is what Mary needs. She will be able to escape and be herself in the garden. Finally, her imagination is growing and she is beginning to be involved with the world around her. Mary goes back home and Martha has a gift from her mom. After hearing Mary’s story Martha’s mom was worried about Mary’s circumstances and thought she could uses a jump rope. Mary graciously took the gift and took it to the garden to test t out. She again bumps into Ben and the robin. As she skips through the field a slight wind moves some of the vines on the wall. Under all the vines is a door, Mary quickly goes and unlocks the door to the secret
