For multiple years, schools all over the United States have banned books from the classroom setting, for the use of keeping the content appropriate for students. While over a hundred of books have been banned, almost more than half have had a profound effect on American life. This had stirred individuals to wonder who determines which books should stay or go, since most of them can have a positive impact on readers. The Secret Life of Bees is known to be one of the “top best sellers for young adults”, as some students may be able to relate to the young character throughout the story. Americans, have found freedom in women’s empowerment, believing in multiple rights of religion, and have come together to discover more and more issues that still need to be conquered. A main issue discovered in the book regards abusive relationships between the father and daughter standpoint. Throughout the story the father constantly disciplines his daughter in abusive ways and at one point “He [pours] a mound of grits the size of an anthill onto the pine floor. [and says] ‘Get over here and kneel down’”(Kidd 24). In the society of 1964, corporal punishment was used to make children learn from their mistakes and have a better behavior. Currently, parents take away children's electronics or keys to their cars expecting them to make changes to their actions, meanwhile, fifteen minutes later they become acquitted because their parents become overwhelmed with guilt. It is appropriate for students to learn about the hardships in a society that has made what our society is like today. Students believe that not getting their way of things is rude of their parents while, there used to be children who were beaten by their parents every night.
