While the women were able to buy cosmetics and clothes. Advertisement became big and convinced people to buy items. Movies became popular and the Motion Picture Association was created because of all the scandals. Radio also became popular and congress passed the Radio Act to regulate what was allowed to play on the radio.
The Stonewall Riots were the spark for the LGBTQ+ rights movement, affecting the social and political environments for people of the LGBTQ+ community. It took decades of organized struggle to get the political and social environment for queer people to where it is today. The watershed moment for that struggle was started in the early morning of June 28, 1969 The Stonewall Riots were an uprising against the prosecution of queer people. They started at around 1:20am on June 28, 1969 when police raided the popular gay bar the Stonewall Inn on Christopher street.
In other words, the rise of the women’s rights movement in the period 1940-1975 was prompted by a multitude of components. World War II brought about a dramatic change for America. Women were encouraged to partake in the war
The harshest impact this movement went through was the incident that happened in Stonewall. Police raided Stonewall Inn. A gay club located in Greenwich Village in New York. Many people were arrested, especially crossdressers. People were aggressively manhandled brusquely not to mention that a lesbian was hit over the head by a police officer, causing the crowd to fight back.
During the 1800s, the Reform Movements caused an uproar in the community. It’s the time when the leaders felt like they needed to change the way society works, and are desperate to take actions upon the problems they saw. The leaders knew right away that they needed to fix_ this issue immediately. Women’s rights and slavery were the issues that movement leaders were most concerned about. At the time, women and men had different roles in the Middle Class.
With feminism taking over the nation, many women found a new sense of freedom. Between 1960 and 1975, the number of college women having se doubled, and with that came the demand for birth control, leading to the Griswold v. Connecticut
They were all starting to become more informed about their pregnancy options which gave them control over their bodies. Infact surveys showed nearly 90 percent of college-educated couples practiced contraception. Therefore, women no longer feared having sex because they could have control over reproduction by having access to birth
Freedom was equated to sexual promiscuity and embracing one’s sexual self. No longer would young women feel constrained to reject pre-marital sex. Rather during the 1920’s “necking” and “petting” were terms used to describe the new definition of courtship. Young women embraced their new found sexuality.
The private life took a more liberated step, with more sexual freedom for both straight and gay couples, the former being helped by the invention of the Pill and the latter stopping to be illegal in the eyes of the law. But it was also a change in the sense of political change and protest with the hippies and the movements against nuclear weapons and the Vietnam war. Most of the changes that made the 1960s, "the Swinging Sixties" were possible because the consumer society was beginning to settle in and people had generally more income and more money to spend. In London, workers earned 170 times for than the cost of life in the 1950s, and 183 times more than the cost of life in the 1960s.
The Vietnam War, which included violence and tragedy, the outbreaks of sustained public violence and assassinations, the Black Panther Party, the rise of Women's suffrage, and the introduction of birth control pills caused “homosexual liberation and struck against anti-homosexual prejudice” appeared. From the LGBTQ+ community, there was a massive increase in pop culture and social activism, the sexual liberation movement as well as the AIDs epidemic, causing an extreme social change. A group called GLF, Gay Liberation Front had an intellectual and political excitement during this time. GLF organized Sunday night meetings and was able to publish in the newspaper Come Out!, which became highly influential for the LGBT community. The GLF started the Gay Activists Alliance, GAA, which mainly focused on achieving civil rights for gay people.
Women's personal freedom had also came about. They started to dress with a sexual look. Such as short skirts, smoking,etc..
First, it sought the expansion of civil rights and liberties, including the fight against racial and gender discrimination. Consequently, American society reacted well to these demands and adapted policies and laws to pursue equal rights and opportunities. Secondly, the counterculture movement emphasized the importance of cultivating tolerance towards different forms of sexuality. By and large, this goal was achieved through the sexual revolution that eliminated societal taboos surrounding unconventional sex. Thirdly, the hippie movement considered it vital to build a peaceful and nonviolent society.
In the 1950s and 1960s, American culture, society, and politics underwent the largest transformation since the Civil War. Unpopular wars in Indochina sparked widespread protest and gave rise to the counterculture movement. Polarization in politics grew as trust in the government plummeted, and Americans lived in fear of a communist threat to national security. However, these decades also gave rise to an energized movement for civil rights. Groups which had been suppressed in the past, especially African Americans, began to publicize their cause through the new mass media provided by television.
Throughout human history, activists have organized social movements to attain one goal; that is to change and improve the society that they live in. The tactics that are used in social movements, however, seem to have changed over time becoming more organized, mobilized, and non-violent due to the growth of media and social networking. We can see how, throughout the years, the tactics have changed after the 1970's compared to how they were before that time in history. For instance, if we go all the way back to the Women’s Suffrage movement, in 1920, we can see how tactics have changed over time. The Women's Suffrage was a social movement led by women who believed they deserved the right to vote just like men did.
Understanding gender and sexuality as socially constructed categories is important because it helps people understand a certain group. Gender and sexuality is expressed in many categories and people must be careful not to mix people in the wrong category. Simply because one expresses their sexuality different from another person does not mean they should be bashed or treated differently. Sometimes it does not matter what you identify as, who you identify with, people will always judge you, so its best people just do what they want. Putting gender in a category helps others not stereotype them as something they are not.
