The word “Family” means a group of people living under one roof. But the novel “The Hate you Give” by Angie Thomas gives this word a completely different meaning. Through Starrs challenges in the novel, Starr changes but the love her family gives her does not. The most important word in this novel is the word “family,” because throughout the novel Starrs family supports her throughout her fight for justice for Khalil; come together through challenges and inspire and set a role model for the Garden Heights community.
Starr’s fights for justice for khalil was not an easy one, and many had their own positive and negative opinions on the matter which took a mental and physical toll on Starr; but Starr's family was always there to support her. When working at her fathers store Kenya went off on Starr for not speaking up, however when she did she would get hate from Hailey. In the beginning of the novel Starr takes other people's opinions into account more than she does her own, but through the novel and constant support of her family she shares her truth regardless of what others have to say about it. “‘Brave does not mean you’re not scared, Starr,’ she says. ‘It means you go on even though you’re scared. In the beginning of the novel much like the members in the Carter family the people of Garden Heights are afraid, afraid of telling the truth and being themselves. In the beginning of the novel Starr is afraid of introducing her white boyfriend to her dad, we can see a resemblance in Garden heights. People can not tell the truth , without being in fear of the king; they can't go out to the basketball court, like Starr did for example, without the feeling of being unsafe.
