When many people think of the American dream, they think of it as something concrete; meaning that if they work as hard as they can their work will pay off and they will be able to obtain a large amounts of money and other material
The American dream is not as easy as people say it is. The American Dream is being able to afford the necessities you need, without having to struggle and suffer just to put food on a table for their families. People think it’s easy to live the American Dream, but little do they know that there are people out there struggling to support their family. The American Dream is difficult to achieve but very possible if people could find the opportunity and available to them.
When one in-visons the golden and all-powerful idea that is known simply as The American Dream it is only human to immediately think of the “grand” result of achieving the stereotypical dream, portrayed in a vast majority of pieces of media are the struggle and often overlooked deception that gaining and earning this idea of the dream costs. In most cases (and always in the cliché), the end all result of “working one’s entire life to earn the American dream” is seen as an ultimate bliss or euphoria because it means that one is earned the life they now have by putting in blood, sweat, and tears. Those claims quite possibly and a lot of the times accurate but what is almost always ignored is the journey to the dream. This journey is the complete opposite of the dream

The 20s were a time of prosperity with the economy rising, with many get-rich-quick schemes that made people strive for their American dream. Gatsby was able to use the prosperity of the time to get rich and climb the socioeconomic ladder, which led him to have his American Dream within reach. In The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald there is a constant similarity between Gatsby’s American Dream and that of most people in the 20s because the novel shows that people will do anything to get to their American dream no matter how corrupt it is, most American dreams equate with social status, and the attempts to reach the American dream
Blogger Dr. Anna Wulick defines the American Dream as “the belief that anyone, regardless of race, class, gender, or nationality, can be successful in America if they just work hard enough.” Historian James Truslow Adams also defines the American Dream as “That dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.” According to these individuals, the American Dream can be obtained by anybody as long as they work hard enough to be equally as rich as everybody else. When Gatsby finally came into contact with Daisy, all of the significance suddenly went away. All of the fantasy suddenly went into reality and it wasn’t as much of a fairytale as he had presumed. The American dream might not hold the same awe inspiring sound that it once did, but for many generations before ours, it was a beacon of hope that helped build the foundation that the United States was built on. And still today the American dream might not be as achievable as it once was, but it is still an important symbol to the American ideology.
Impossible Dreams The meaning of the American Dream can be seen as ”A uniquely American vision of the country consisting of three central ideas. The American dream consists of a belief in America as the new Eden- a land of beauty, bounty, and unlimited promise; a feeling of optimism, created by ever expanding opportunity; and a confidence in the triumph of the individual.” Using this definition of the so called “American dream”, it seems to be a great representation of it at first, until you realize it includes everyone as the individual. From the beginning of the Civil war to the end of the War to End All Wars, the American Dream wasn’t possible due to the treatment of the Native Americans, the inequality between women and men, and the false promises given to the immigrants coming to our country in their time of need.
The American dream is a term used in a lot of ways. Although research has shown that American dream can’t be attainable by most people, closer examination shows that it can be attainable by the following reasons. As Daniel J. Mitchell stated in New York Times im January 1st, 2015 “The United States is not a perfect country, but the American Dream is still a reality.” By that he meant that even with America’s Grow rate, poverty, unemployment rate in the past years and still going Americans can still chase their American dreams If we look at the history and the definition it shows that infact it is possible to attain it.
The American Dream is an opportunity in which a determined person can have exceptional success through dedication and hard work, achieving equality, freedom, and personal goals. As immigrants, my grandparents followed this beacon of hope, and had this one thing in mind: a better life. Coming from

Most people believe that the American dream is making six plus figures, living in a mansion, driving a Corvette, but actually it is just being happy with their own life. Everyone wants a dream where they are happy, because any other dream would be a nightmare. Being happy is also another way to succeed in life, so if anyone thinks the American dream is being successful then be happy, and then they have the American dream. The American dream will always tie in with happiness. If the people are not happy then they do not have the American dream.
The American Dream means something different to everyone. I think the American Dream is something that can be gained with sacrifice, risk-taking and hard work, not just by chance.
The Problem with the American Dream According to the history books, the widely-known expression “the American Dream” was originally coined by James Truslow Adams in 1931. It was first described in Adams’s book “The Epic of America” as “...not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain the fullest stature of which they are innately capable.” Over the years, America has become more egalitarian, but much must be done until there is true equality. Although the concept of the American Dream has always been believed to be open to everyone, throughout American history it has only been continuously accessible to the upper-class majority.
