During the Sabbath, many different foods and customs are resembled and practiced throughout this Jewish holiday. These specific religious customs practiced, and foods prepared during the Sabbath, have brought joy in the hearts of many by being able to praise and give back to their god. In “The Son from America,” the old couple living in the small, petite village of Lentshin, Poland showed and resembled the importance of religious, Jewish foods and customs on the Sabbath. Along with Challah, Another popular dish prepared during the Sabbath is called gefilte fish. Gefilte, meaning stuffed is a dish made up of ground, deboned fish stuffed into fish skin and then baked (“Wasserman”). The fish mainly used to make up this dish is called carp (“Wasserman”). Many people used this fish to make gefilte fish for many reasons; one was that carp was very plentiful and inexpensive (“Wasserman”). Jewish Individuals eat fish and this distinct cuisine on the Sabbath because ancient Jews once thought that fish was an aphrodisiac (“Martin-Ullrich”). Not only is challah and Gefilte fish iconic and popular dishes during the Sabbath, but also is cholent- a hearty stew made with meat, and chicken soup (“Tori Avey”). Along with religious foods during the Sabbath, religious customs during the Sabbath are also prevalent in “The Son from America”. During this religious holiday it is very important for an individual to light the Sabbath candles (“Shabbat Customs”). Lighting the candles is a very important custom during the Sabbath. When a person lights the candles, predominately two, one must close their eyes and recite a blessing while they are doing it (“Shabbat Customs”).
