Lane’s Pillaging the Empire: Piracy in the Americas 1500- 1750 focuses on Spain and Portugal’s encounters with pirates in the Americas during the early modern era. Lane diverges from traditional history on piracy through his attempt to place pirates in a world-historical perspective and he emphasizes how pirates were motivated by their desire for money rather than patriotic motives. Lane is a professor of Colonial Latin American History at Tulane University. The purpose of Pillaging the Empire is to provide a chronological survey of piracy in the Americas and introduce maritime predation in Spain’s colonial holdings between 1500 and1750.
The businessmen of colonial New York strove to succeed in their trade by any means possible, often resorting to violence and bribery in order to increase their profit margin. However, their methods were not limited to violence. Throughout Defying Empire the reader is often bombarded with descriptions of the mindsets of the eponymous merchants. The text goes into detail cataloging the general thought processes behind some of the most ingenious smuggling conventions of the 18th century. They utilized any tools at their disposal in order to continue their businesses including powerful connections and money.
Ghana was a massive empire, sustained by trade routes stretching across the continent. Mali was a smaller kingdom and a province within the empire of Ghana. One of the aspiring rulers was Soumaoro, king of the city of Sosso. The Sosso started invading and conquering other cities and managed to invade Mali. However, Soumaoro found himself opposed by a Mali leader of the Keita clan named Sundiata.
Tension began to rise, as George III became the king of Great Britain in 1760. At first, he was an appreciated king, but because of his political views and whom he appointed as his ministers he quickly lost his fame. His first appointed minister George Greenville would impose several taxes on the colonist that would cause them to cry taxation without representation. The king also imposed the Proclamation of 1763, which regulated colonist expansion to the newly won territories in the west. And finally, after the calming before the storm, the tension broke with the Last Imperial Crisis.

One of the reasons why the Ghana Empire was significant is because of its role in the trans-Saharan trade. The empire controlled the trade routes that connected West Africa with North Africa and Europe. They traded gold, ivory, and salt.

The five imperial wars greatly impacted everyone who participated. Moreover, the French and Indian War caused the thirteen colonies to become closer politically and culturally. In fact, it brought English colonists together as Americans for the first time and allowed them to realize the true intentions of the British Empire. English American settlement was a melting pot of “self-reliant individual landholders, fiercely independent in pursuit of their own interest” (American Yawp, chp.4). They had previously developed their own political institutions, each colony creating their own assembly in which carried out the same duties that Britain exercised such as taxation, managing revenue, and granting salaries to royal officials.

Though we have improved on most innovations, our ancestors still established our cultivations. There were many decades where people developed their lands, but the main western empires were the Persian, Greek, Roman, and the Han Dynasty. Each territory had their own inventions, but most of them were very similar.
In South Africa, word of the Europeans had not yet travelled and the first encounter brought with it interesting perceptions. In one instance, the people of Tswana were thrown into fits of convulsive laughter at the strangeness of the white men and referred to them as ‘white lice’. However, the Zulu and Natal tribes of South Africa, known for their strong ancestral homage rituals, met the Europeans with extreme caution. The Zulu tribe believed that the Europeans were sea creatures, and the Natal tribe believed them to have come from the sky.
